waterproof material but it's too small for good coverage
After doing some research I bought a set of these for a family trip 6 months ago to replace some well worn Frogg Toggs. I've used them in the rain for short and long hikes several times now.Pros:1) Kept our upper torsos dry in decent rains (I have not used this in persistent downpours, and I would not want to use it in that kind of weather without rain paints too -- see below).2) light & compact; I can take it along when the weather looks iffy without adding much weight3) will fit over a day packCons:1) It really needs an cinch string at the waist. In any decent wind (wind often happens with rain!), it's blowing all over the place -- and that's a problem in rain and cold.... as a result, you get wet from the waist down (which could cause a survival situation). A cinch string would help minimize the wind effect without requiring rain pants / gaiters.2) Far too small in its overall size: I'm 6' / 200 lbs, and I get wet from the mid-thigh down. I can live with that, but I am a birder & nature photographer, which means that I'm carrying binoculars, camera/s, and sometimes a pack or scope on longer hikes. I need something to protect my expensive camera gear while keeping it readily accessible, and this is too short to protect it---and if I'm wearing a pack or if there's any wind, forget any coverage at all. It's really hard to tell from the Amazon site what the exact dimensions are when open (you have to dig a bit)-- although there are several prominent mentions of its folded size. Perhaps they need to make a super-size one for people carrying gear. Seriously, most on-line searches for ponchos re-direct to rain jackets -- but there are brands in larger sizes, so I'm getting a replacement.3) The material is too loud for birding -- and this is worse in the wind. The cheaper Frogg Togg material was quiet enough; I had an old army surplus poncho for decades, and that wasn't bad either.4) It's bit small in the neck opening: I could live with the fight getting my binoculars in/out, but velcro or a snap would be really helpful. To me, it seems like the target audience/purpose is family outings. And it would be just fine for that. If you're more serious about the outdoors and/or carry gear, this probably won't serve you well.

3 star rating to 5 star rating
I have a slightly above average sized head. The opening of the poncho for the face and head is a bit tight.Update: October 11th, 2018I wrote the review above after I took the poncho to my trip to the mountains of Guatemala. It was only when it started raining I took out the poncho and realized that the opening of the poncho was tight. It still got the job done but was a bit uncomfortable. I came back and wrote a short and honest review to help those with an "above average sized head" make an informed decision. I wasn't disappointed nor was I expecting Terra Hiker to reach out. They emailed me and asked me if I was willing to try out their new and updated poncho. They sent me one and the adjustable collar area makes it significantly easier for me to put on. And its more comfortable to keep on because there's a little more space in the neck area.My five star rating is for two reasons.1. The poncho is not flimsy. It will keep you and your gear dry. The adjustable collar area makes it a truly one size fits all.2. They didn't need to reach out and fix this. Their product is as described. Quite frankly my head size is not their fault. But they reached out and sent me a modified rain poncho. No they didn't ask me to "update" the review but how can I not after experiencing excellent customer service!

Great poncho - light, waterproof, less condensation and tougher than plastic
Used on a backpacking hike on the Superior Hiking Trail during wet weather, and it performed wonderfully. It kept me and my pack dry, without weighing me down.I actually got it caught on a sharp stick while hiking somewhat fast, and had no permanent damage from an event that I KNOW would have ripped a plastic poncho in half, and probably would have wrecked or at least put a large tear in a Frogg Toggs poncho.I recommend adding paracord corner ties, about 7" with the knot close to the corner eyelets and longer tails. In heavier rain, I pulled the knot from the front through the hole in the back tie to keep them together for more protection. When it was warmer and just on-and-off sprinkles of rain, I hooked the front corner ties inside the poncho to the neck closure toggle to allow more airflow and keep me much cooler. When the rain stopped while hiking, it was small enough when rolled up that I just tucked it under my pack's sternum strap rather than having to open up my pack. I had less condensation inside this poncho than I've had when using plastic ponchos in the past, and it weighs less than one-fourth what my military-style poncho weighs.I had it over my pack at night when we got 2.5" of rain, and my pack was still dry in the morning. I like the orange color. All around this worked just great and I loved it.

does what it is supposed to do!
We used these while traveling in Edinburgh...a couple of days were really windy with off & on rain all day and everywhere this poncho covered us, we stayed dry. They did not rip or tear at all....even in some pretty strong winds, so these are much better than the typical thin plastic ones you usually see. Only negative points are they are very wide...probably too wide for an average size person, but that way, your backpack, bags, etc you may be carrying will also stay dry. Although you will look huge! I also found the hood too large and it had an impact on side to side visibility...when crossing streets I had to remove it entirely to safely see traffic. It comes packaged in a very small bag which makes it very portable, until you use it. We could not get them refolded to fit in the bag, which was a shame b/c that would have been nice when we were repacking everything for our trip home.
