Music for the dining, and for the soul
I picked up this cd years ago at a bargain price, and have not regretted it since. Georg Philip Telemann (1681 - 1767) was almost contemporaneous with Handel and Bach, yet his music has its own personality and own stamp throughout. He was a prolific composer, and his Tafelmusik (or "table music) was written specifically to be heard while dining - good for the digestion, I'm sure. This cd offers the Suite for Strings and Basso Continuo "La Lyra" in e minor. The cd plays for just over 60 minutes, and is all beautifully played. The cd, being one of a more bargain-oriented series, does not offer many notes or much more information, but the suite is is divided into 8 movements. If you are a fan of Telemann already, you are almost bound to be familiar with at least some of his Tafelmusik. If you are familiar with Bach or Handel, Telemann offers another layer in the late Baroque repertoire - his music is fresh and interesting, and has a definite `Telemann' feel to it. It is light and refreshing, yet never trite or simplistic. Well worth listening to, and you're positively encouraged to put it on while having dinner.
