Great Insights
The authors, one of which is CEO of a company that does gamification for a living, make an exceptionally persuasive case that this approach - essentially to make a game, or include game like elements, into the customer or employee experience to promote and encourage engagement. While there are some Dummies books that read more like an advertisement for the author's business than a thought leading book, this isn't one of them. The approach is very general, the overview at a level that a non-technical professional will understand, and while the examples and screenshots are often from the author's own company, there is very little touting done in the book. The concept of gamification is one that I was only recently introduced to by a business partner who had utilized the approach to drive engagement levels for his customer base to unprecedented levels in our industry. The discussion we had, and the results he was obtaining led me to explore this approach - right when this book was being released. The book made the entire concept make sense, and walks through case studies and examples of 6 strategies that can be adapted to most business use cases. Reading the book, one immediately can understand the process and the power of the approach in the 21st century. The authors also provide a great follow on reading list in the "Part of 10's" that immediately saw me jump on this site to buy a few of. This was enough of a spark that it led me to email our product and engineering teams on a holiday weekend and encourage them to dig into this concept and read this book.If you have an employee or a customer, are responsible for a process or a sale, this book needs to be read. The path to the future is here - in this book. The writing itself may not be the best I have ever read, but the message certainly was a call to action. Buy it. Read it.

Excellent strategic guide to applying gamification to your business
Once you get past the title; I am referring to the "Dummies" part, you will find a very readable guide to applying some very interesting and rather new principals to winning over customers and employees. If you haven't heard of it, gamification is the application of techniques learned in the video and online gaming industries to build loyalty and interest. Basically, gamification uses the principal of positive feedback to engage people. Games do a wonderful job of drawing players deeper and deeper into their plots. Now you can learn how this works and how you can apply this knowledge to your business.By using real life cases, the book describes six gamification frameworks along with ideas about applying these frameworks in a number of common business scenarios. This is important stuff. Too many businesses have failed to build any real engagement with customers. As the web gets more and more important to business strategy, it's critical to understand how to leverage the online world to make positive gains in business success. This book will help. It won't solve your problems, but it should shine a light into an area that could become a set of useful tools in building loyalty. You won't regret buying and reading this book.

Good for Idea Generation
I was surprised by how many good ideas I generated reading this book. At the end of the day, that's largely what it is: an idea-generation machine. There is a lot of great information in here about basic psychology, game theory, and so on, much of which you probably already know. But here's the key: it's written in a very accessible, quick and easy to read style, full of real-world examples. The book focuses on engaging, motivating, inspiring, and incentivizing two key groups of people: those you work with (or who work for you) and those you are trying to reach (especially customers or clients). It does it very effectively. I found that I was generating too many ideas for new ways to inspire people -- customers, colleagues, the politically like-minded, or whomever -- to think too closely about what I was actually reading. I had to force myself to slow down a bit and focus. This is definitely a worthwhile read for anyone looking to motivate others more effectively.

Excellent Resource! 3 Reasons to Buy this Dummies Book
1- Very detailed expose' on how to build a game. For example how often do you reinforce behavior of your learner/players? How do you detect and handle people who "game" the system. What types of players are there? This is good; some play for themselves, others for the community, still others for the competition. Better be able to offer elements that embrace each.2 - Tons of detail on design elements, focal points and more. For example, you "train/play" in order to change behavior as evidence that learning has occurred. Get it right or it's fun and no learning occurs. That's expensive, even if you built it cheap.3 - Significant information on gamification providers. You can breeze through the book for some basic understanding, then start connecting with companies that can build your software program.MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

For once, a Dummies book that doesn't treat the reader like an actual, you know, dummy
I have a love-hate relationship with the Dummies books. I like the idea of a simple presentation style aimed at beginners. I don't like the lame humor attempts and outdated branding style. The Gamification book keeps a lot of the silly fluff to a minimum, though. This one's pretty actionable and packed with good ideas for bringing gaming ideas to businesses. It goes beyond the beginner mode, which is a good thing. More of the Dummies books should take their cues from this text.NOTE: It's more customer-oriented than employee-related - how to find and retain clients/patrons.RECOMMENDATION: If you have a real world business or an internet shop, this is highly useful information. I know I go out of my way to shop at places that value my loyalty in tangible ways. People like being rewarded and recognized. I think gamification is only going to become more important in a poor economy. Well recommended.
