Got my book!
I received my "Mike Holmes Kitchens and Bathrooms; Expert Ideas and Great Advice", by Mike Holmes book today! It arrived in perfect condition and even though I was expecting it to be spiral bound, it's not a big deal to me. I am just a fan of him and his work and love watching his shows. My daughter and SIL are the project doers in the family; my late husband was not the "project" type! Lol, far from it, but we had a lot of phone numbers from our 44 years. Since his death, I now live with our daughter and SIL, and two grandchildren. I appreciate AceBook getting the book to me in a timely fashion. Thank you!

Read this before you do any remodeling
This should be your First Resource before embarking on a kitchen and bath remodel. It's very readable, even when discussing all the details about plumbing, electrical, HVAC, foundation and insulation. You get Mike's professional opinion on everything from flooring to skylights, cabinets to lighting. There are so many photos of great ideas and some examples of shoddy work that you might not even notice at first. After reading this book, you'll be much more confident in choosing and working with contractors. You'll know what goes into a well-built cabinet and how to pick out cheaply-made fixtures. He provides a lot of photos and illustrations and I value Mike's opinion because understands that some people have modest means but still want the job done right. Most homeowners only care what their kitchen and bath looks like on the outside but knowing what goes on behind the walls, under the floor, and above the ceiling is so important. After reading Mike's book, I made some important changes to my project, changed my mind on the type of cabinets I will order, and have much more interest in working with the contractor and tradesmen and women during the project. Instead of clearing out, I'll be an active observer. I will be able to ask them questions about what they are doing and understand the answers. I will be able to recognize expert work and know when they might be cutting corners.

More useful for standalone homes than shared dwellings
This is very helpful if you're new to the home reno process. I took off a star because it doesn't provide pictures of things done incorrectly v. correctly and presumes every person doing a renovation lives in a house. This book will only take you so far if you own a shared dwelling (like a condo or townhouse). Another thing to keep in mind: Mike's writing about renovating in Canada, not the U.S., so make sure you check building codes in your area.

What to look for, not what to do.
Before anyone gets defensive, I think Mike Holmes is one of the greatest living humans on Earth. I love his shows and magazine. I thought I'd love this book- but I was very disappointed.I guess I expected more. If you are a hands-off homeowner (or future homeowner) who is buying a house or considering hiring a contrator to do a job on your house, this book is for you! This book will help you identify potential problems with your structure or with the people you intend to hire. Mike recommends certain materials and lets you know what to look out for.Though, that's it. If you watch the show, you already know most of this. But I'm not the kind of guy who farms this stuff out. I do it myself- framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, whatever. I'm certainly not a professional and I'm sure I'm not "doing it (completely) right." I was hoping that this book would show me how to make it right. For example, I'm re-doing my bathroom. There's little to nothing about venting the drain pipes. Yeah, it says that if you have xyz problem, there's an issue with venting. But it doesn't tell you the proper way to vent anything- just to call a pro.Sorry, Mike. Teach me how to do it, not how to pay someone to do it!

Valuable as expected
I have been so impressed by Mike Holmes 'Make it Right' programs on Cable TV in Australia that I have been inspired to actually tackle a bathroom renovation in this house. It was new when we moved in 34 years ago but could do with some attention now!I intend to do the work myself but before I started I wanted to have Mikes's advice readily available, hence my purchase of this book. The book contained less technical advice than I had hoped for as a 'do it yourself' renovator but it was still very valuable. The Kitchen will be tacked shortly and Mikes's advice on Kitchens will also assist this future project. The reader does need to recognise that difference in climate and building regulations between Canada and Australia may affect such projects.

Great Guide to Renovations and Many Useful Tips
I read through most of this book and found that it gives homeowners much useful information about planning your kitchen or bathroom renovation and also give useful tips such as, when renovating your kitchen and considering whether to purchase commercial grade appliances or a commercial-look, I had no idea that actual commercial grade appliances, such as a stove used in a restaurant, needs special clearance around the stove, knobs are not childproof and, some insurance will not cover a commercial stove used in a residence. There may also be city codes against this so, I'd say that this book is a must have for anyone planning a renovation.
