None of the Above: Reflections on Life beyond the Binary

This was a thoughtful and thought-provoking book. It expanded my awareness and reinforced my commitment to actively support the trans community.

Travis Alabanza is an incredibly talented artist. None of The Above is an amazing read.

I’m familiar with Travis’s work as an artist having seen them perform poetry on stage and perform in a very challenging show some years ago. I found them deeply impressive then but even more so now having really been opened up myself by this beautifully written and thoughtful book. I would consider myself as someone who is reasonably educated and gender aware, and I hope (& try to be) an ally to trans friends and colleagues in my life. However the central theme of this book - the acceptance of fluidity in direct opposition to the world around us that tries to pin people down to the binary - was something I hadn’t really fully grasped as a cis gender person. And the difficulties anyone identifying as outwith that binary make so much sense as we in this world just want to pin things down and take the life out of them. Despite all the forces that have tried to do this to this incredible and resilient artist - Travis sounds as if they have lived and expressed more within their relatively young life than most people will ever experience in their whole lives!

Emotional. Honest and one to read to understand gender isn't binary. And we shouldn't put boxes and limits on others, or each other.

I've sought a book like this one for so long - humourous and honest about the near-surreal non-binary experience from the perspective of someone with multiple dimensions of marginalisation. I recommend this to anyone with an interest in how "otherness" impacts people's realities and how the taken-for-granted things we come see as "normal" are produced by much larger and complex social systems. Absolutely incredible!
