TLDR2: Changing my recommendation to 3 stars after having this cable die after a few years. If you're looking for a one time "forever" cable don't buy this. I ran the cable through the attic and now it's dead after shorting itself. (10/28/26: finally removed the cable from the attic and attached pictures of power and ground wires shorting out) TLDR1: This cable REQUIRES a powered usb hub, or for the end device to be self powered, bus powered devices will not work. Enabling USB standby power to always on in the bios seems to alleviate devices not being recognized during startup. Update 5/7/25: A few days ago the cable died. I am using this cable with the startech 10 port powered usb hub. On the front of the hub is a led that blinks when it is not getting a signal, and turns solid once it has completed the usb handshake and is receiving a signal. I turned on my pc but none of my devices where working, then I noticed the usb hub light was blinking. I tried unplugging both ends, restarting the pc, unplugging the hub, and all the variations I could think of but no connection was being made. I did notice that the device end of the cable was getting extremely warm, and after messing around I decided that since I'm waaay outside the return/warranty window I'd cut the cable open. To my surprise I found that there are 3 wires and a grounding sheath, positive & negative power, and the optical. So maybe you don't need a powered hub after all? The issue that I saw was that the rubber around the positive and ground had melted causing a short, which made the wire unusable. I tried to use some electrical tape to cover the short but no joy. For now I'm using a different cable that is shorter, with it just sitting on the floor, definitely not ideal. Due to the issues in my previous updates, how finicky the cable is, and the fact that it died years after running it through the attic, I'm lowering my rating to 3 stars. After much research I wouldn't recommend this cable if you're doing a permanent install since you'll likely have to replace it after a few years and I don't want to fish wires through my walls, I want a one time install that lasts. Instead I'd recommend getting an Icron dock. Yes they're very expensive but from the long term reviews I've found they stand the test of time, and you can replace the ends instead of replacing the cable if one dies. Update 3 1/9/25: Maybe this cable just needed to be broken in(?), but my connectivity woes seem to have gone away. I'm now using a male to male adapter, and a 12 inch TB4 cable with a screw lock in order to relieve the cable strain on both the cable and USB hub. The cable continues to work as advertised. Update 2 7/26/24: Still getting intermittent loss of connection issues, although far less frequently. Now it only seems to happen if I unplug either end. When I do have issues I have to unplug both ends, plug in the source, then plug in the output. Since the original review I added 2 LG monitors with usb ports, both are plugged in the 10-port hub, total of 8 devices, still no bandwidth issues. I also added an OWC USB-C cling-on adapter to give the output(USB-C) end more rigidity. I was getting worried about the cable sagging in the usb hub port. Update 1/07/24: I started having intermittent issues with the cable not communicating correctly. I would have to unplug both ends for it to start working again. In the bios I turned on standby power for the usb ports and the issue has not occurred since then. Original review: I finally got around to moving my gaming pc to a different room and this cable has been working without any issues. I didn't want to use thunderbolt due to quirks a few youtubers have mentioned. Plus this cable doesn't require an add-on card to work. I ran the cable through the attic and have it plugged in to a 10 port startech 10gbps hub(10G8A2CS-USB-C-HUB). I did this so I wouldn't have to worry about powered devices since the cable doesn't carry power(this is obvious but some people legitimately aren't aware). The hub has a Glorious keyboard with RGB, a PWNAGE mouse, Scarlett 2i2, Stream Deck, Logitech 4k Brio, Xbox controller, and wireless headset receiver plugged in. The Logitech 4k Brio is especially susceptible to USB bandwidth and it has no issues with this setup. Originally I had a startech 4-port hub(HB31C3A1CS) but I quickly ran out of ports.
