Is this really worth it?

Yes, if you have the Snowpeak fire pit, this is a nice accessory if you use charcoal or small wood chunks for grilling. It’s very robust/high quality.

Does this grate come with a bag?

Hi Jim, I just bought the grate a month or so and it did not come with a bag. I already had the vi ya bag so I bought the canvas bag to carry the Grill and most Of the accessories and will use the vi one for the lighter stuff. Haven’t Worked it all out since I can’t use it for my camping what with the wildfires here ? Out west).

How many briquettes would you use with this? (I have the grill, but not coal accessory yet.)

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I have used it a number of times and it’s really awesome! I guess really the answer is in how much you want to cook on it. One thing to be aware of, it’s very heavy.

Does this grate help wood fires also, or just charcoal?

So if you look at the construction of the Snow Peak Portable Firepit, it forms a deeply inverted pyramid. The purpose of the "grate" or SP Coal Bed is to raise the coals of whatever you are burning to form a flatter and even surface and more evenly distribute the heat. In the case of cooking, it would work well with either charcoal or wood. I usually remove it when used as a fire pit as you can add significantly more fuel, but if you only wanted a small fire, it helps to raise it and make it more "meaningful" in the sense that the fire is easier to see and enjoy.
