This Wood Chips “Refill” set provides nine tins of wood chips including all the standards varieties like Oak and Apple, as well as the less common Pecan, Mesquite and Cinnamon. That gives you some options for smoking foods as well as cocktails. The tins are medium sized, providing a reasonable volume of material as compared to competitors’ kits. I also like that the tins are clearly labelled and have screw tops that seal well to keep out moisture.I have had the opportunity to review dozens of cocktail smoking kits and each kit has come with several containers of wood chips. I’ve included some comparison photos showing the (most common) Oak chips from several of those kits alongside the Oak chips included with this set. Aside from the size of the containers, the key difference is in the size/shape of the chips themselves, which can vary a good bit. In general, cocktail smokers should have small-to-fine chips (vs. splinters or chunks) that fit easily in the basket of the smoker. As you are only using a pinch of chips for each beverage, it is important that the chips are small enough to fit in the smoker’s mesh basket and that they have a high surface area so that they light easily. As you can see in the pictures, the Oak wood chips included in this set are a good size for cocktail smokers, as were the other woods in the set (not shown) - Only the cinnamon was chunky, but still small enough to fit in the smoker’s mesh screen. I had not used Cinnamon in my smoker, so I tested it out by making a very good Black Manhattan [2oz Rye, 1oz Amaro, Angostura bitters, ice and cinnamon smoke directly in the shaker]. I was pleased with the result. This set is a good option for restocking your cocktail smoker.
