Hand carved solid air dried oak beam shaped and sanded to a lovely smooth finish.As you can see from the pictures air dried oak has released most of its moisture content which causes the timber to split and crack over its drying time (stored outside in big stacks)-this is normal for this type of wood and the Tudor's used this very cut of timber (green when worked) to build the dwellings of which some are still standing today 500 years on.Over a period of time the remainder of the moisture within the timber will release and the shakes may grow a little but the oak will not fall apart !!! We can't guarantee how many shakes are within the cut for the mantle but we try to place the worst to the wall and the best face showing. If you'd like to choose a mantle we have several on show at our premises in Nuneaton so please arrange a viewing so you can select one to your liking.
