A Student's Guide to the Navier–Stokes Equations Review: Comprehensive yet understandable. - I hold a PhD in theoretical physics, yet somehow, I never took a course in hydrodynamics. This text plugged the gap in a pleasant and clear way. I recommend it highly. Review: A very clear and thorough approach for explaining Navier-Stokes - I am a chemical engineer and I value how the author explains the essence of transport phenomena. The theory as well as assumptions are clearly outlined. He goes over the many ways how the equations can be written i.e conservative vs non-conservative. I would seriously recommend this book to anyone looking to brush up their skills because it is all I wanted for that.

Not for the casual reader
Although I have an advanced degree in physics, this is a very challenging read. So, unless you already have some expertise in fluid mechanics you will find this impenetrable not because it us poorly written (it's not) but because the N-S equation is so complex, it is still is uncertain that a general solution exists!

Good but have more books handy
Its a good review book for anyone later in their career that needs a refresher, and it covers the mathematics well enough, but I would recommend Modern Compressible Flow for more background

excellent with great examples
takes a number of different approaches to explaining different aspects of the equations; however, not a easy path to follow.

Una delle equazioni più importanti della scienza spiegata passo passo senza lasciare dubbi per strada e senza inutili lungaggini. Questo testo dovrebbe diventare obbligatorio per chiunque voglia studiare questa equazione

This is a very friendly step-by-step guide to the development of the Governing Equations of Fluid Mechanics. The book starts by explaining Mass Conservation and developing the Continuity Equation. Then it turns its attention to the detailed development of the Navier-Stokes Equations in a well paced, lucid fashion, followed by the development of the final piece of the Governing Equations puzzle, the Energy Equation. It also discusses diffusion, advection and scaling to close out this wonderful book. Pedagogically, it is a well thought out and clear introduction to this sometimes difficult topic, and while you are reading it, you will rarely, if ever, find yourself scratching your head wondering where a particular result came from. The derivations given in the text are quite granular and extremely clear which is important for the novice reader of the subject and each term of the equations that are developed are clearly explained. An absolute must for anyone introducing themselves to the subject of fluid mechanics as well as for the more experienced reader. Well done to the author.

I have enjoyed reading through upto a part of the fifth chapter. It's a good introduction to fluid mechanics in general and the governing equations of the same particularly the Navier Stokes equations. However I would also have liked to see them in tensor notation form given that I was more interested in the subject because of the application of fluid mechanics to cosmology. A great read nonetheless...

The tax is clear, and the development well paced. For some reason though, I found it difficult to remember any of the key hacks. I was reading the book for fun, perhaps the teaching style of the book did not match my own learning style.
