Brilliant game to build problem solving and tactical logic skills though initially requires patience and adult support.
Stratego Pirates is a cracking little game to teach the skills of logic, strategy and problem-solving, but it initially takes quite a bit of patience and investment by a adult guiding and/or participating to get the swing of things.Hungry hungry hippos this is not, and as such it isn't a game for all 5 year olds, indeed some 5 year olds would struggle to get to grips especially at first and may get frustrated if left to it or the adult isn't a confident player so I would recommend if this is new to you make sure you assemble the kit and familiarise yourself with the set up and game play beforehand as it will smooth play substantially. In short you each get a ship, 10 pirates and 3 'flags' (two of which are not the real flag). The aim of the game is through chance cards to eliminate the opponents' men on deck and capture their flag either by 'attack' card or firing the projectile canon to score and choosing a flag from the three potentials. The good points of this game are manifold, it is intended to be an introduction to the classic Stratego game aimed at 8+ but this is made to be friendly to young beginners through simplified and shorter play, cartoon renderings of the characters and chance cards, though in itself is not a 'first' board game by any means. This is a fantastic introduction though to any strategy and logic skill game with elements of chess, top trumps, Battleship, risk and through the projectile skill aspect as my hubby remembered from his own childhood a game called Crossbows and Catapults. The game play encourages tactical thinking of which cards to play as the child becomes more adept at the game play and boosts spatial memory skills.Furthermore there is excellent opportunities for development through the combined use of visual and kinaesthetic aspects which develop both lateral and logical thinking along side fine motor skills and spatial awareness by aiming the projectile cannon.Additionally this is great for children who may have great logical skills but for whatever reason have not mastered reading yet as the game doesn't require any reading other than the instructions (which a parent or sibling may do instead) making it suitable for those with language processing issues too. Also a great selling point is that the game pieces self store and double as toys through the fact the ship clips together to be self storing meaning it's ok if you don't get it back in the box nicely or the child wants to play imaginative small world play with it after the game has finished. It's designed to be played with. The downsides are petty to some but crucial to others. For those who play alongside their children or automatically supervise their children's first few game plays this won't be a problem. For those who want a children's game that gives them 10 or more minutes to get on with something or have a cup of tea and a breather this is not the game for you.The instructions are a bit baffling and in a difficult to read font for such novice readers. I think the editor needs to think about the intended age group, their literacy and give some more simplified instructions as you don't really get the point til you've read ALL the instructions and played it through once and got lots of bits wrong. A few choice bulletpoints at the beginning would have made a real difference to getting going with game play. The projectile cannon is a difficult point with some children, the canon fires really well and you only get one projectile so the target age group needs supervision and if your child will not be able to resist firing it at sibling, pet or all and sundry it's not a good idea. However my downsides are not enough to knock stars off, it is a fantastic game once you get it, its the getting it that is important. It's not a game for every 5 year old, and will need support but offers a great potential for intellectual development through logic, strategy and problem solving. Highly recommended.

Exceptional quality - brilliant game!
Wow! This game is brilliant! My son loves pirates and enjoys a challenge, he loved this. It’s a really good tactical thinking game. For games made of plastic and card you always expect them to be a bit inferior and cheaply made. The quality of ship and all accessories is exceptional - it’s going to last for years to come! Why can’t they make all kids games like this! It’s so much fun and so many different activities to do along the way. Brilliant! Best quality game I have ever seen. Brilliant price considering. Love it!
