Interesting Turn Of Direction
I was not sure what to expect from this album as it was reputed to be unlike Bruce's other solo works. I was pleasantly surprised. Despite some of the songs being more rock and less metal as compared to say: Accident Of Birth or The Chemical Wedding, they were an interesting experiment in doing something new and different which overall worked. The 2 CD version which I have, is recommended because of the rarities it contains on the second CD. As Bruce briefly explains in his "Greatest Hits" album, they were part of a "lost album" and Skunkworks currently has the only surving parts of it (at least until they find the missing Master tapes).

Why on earth did I ignore this album for all of these years?!
When it comes to Bruce's solo work his very early releases are often seen as being a bit patchy with particular ire being directed at Skunkworks for being the least metal release in his catalogue. Having been disappointed with both Tattooed Millionaire and Balls To Picasso I always ignored Skunkworks expecting it to be another patchy album that's seen to be his worst release. So imagine my surprise when I heard Strange Death In Paradise on Scream For Me Sarajevo and it absolutely blew my head off! It was on the strength of that track alone I immediately purchased Skunkworks and I can honestly say that it's an absolutely fantastic album. It might not be as "metal" as the holy trinity that is Accident Of Birth, The Chemical Wedding and Tyranny Of Souls albums, all of which are essential purchases, but Skunkworks is easily up there with those albums in terms of sheer quality. The best way I can describe Skunkworks is it's like Bruce is jamming with Gretchin Goes to Nebraska era Kings X on steroids and it sounds amazing. If you've been avoiding this album because of it's online reputation give it a go because you might be very surprised with the song writing and power of this album.

Very Nice Album, not classic metal music however
First of all i am a huge Bruce Dickinson Fan. If i was rating this album for if i liked it, i would give it 5/5. I have listened to it innumerable amount of times, and i really really like it.But i'll try to be objective. This is a weird album. It is nothing like you've ever heard from Dickinson. Nothing you'd expect from him. It isnt metal, more like metal/industrial/grunge, something like that. This will upset a lot of Bruce Dickinson or Maiden Fans, It is true and i dont blame them. Forget the crystall clear vocals, the screams that teared your ears. It is way different. Thus it is very controversial. But it isnt bad, on the contrary, it is a very good album. Just throw away any prejudice's and give it some time. I am sure you will like it.

Bruce`s finest solo album
In my opinion, this is Bruce Dickinson`s finest solo album. Following the experimental "Balls to Picasso", "Skunkworks" sees Bruce trying his hand at `90`s style alternative rock. It works really well, at times the tracks are reminiscent of Rush. Bruce is in fine voice and his band, which featured ex-Gun guitarist Alex Dickson, are really tight. Some of the songs are unorthodox (for metal) with the real standouts being "Back from the edge", "Solar confinement", "Innerspace" and "Strange death in paradise". The whole thing rocks hard with a really loud production. Also included on the second CD are rare out-takes and the four tracks from the now very rare "Skunkworks live EP". This is probably the furthest Bruce has ever strayed from "old school" metal and the results are fantastic and still fresh.
