Durable Masonite panel has a gesso coating over a thin substrate on one side. Super smooth surface is excellent for acrylics, oils, gouache, tempera, pen & ink and much more.

Good for people new to art (who might not know any better!)
I need to preface this review by saying that I am new to art, so I have very little experience painting on anything besides watercolor and acrylic paper. However, I did try pre-primed canvas panels once, and I didn't care for them at all. I didn't like the textured toothiness of the canvas -- I had a hard time getting my paint to cover all the white. I had to keep painting more and more layers of the same color just to cover all the white spots. Also, the paint wouldn't flow off my paintbrush onto the panel -- it felt like the paint immediately dried up or soaked completely into the canvas the minute I started painting. This happened no matter how much paint I loaded onto my brush (I use Liquetex classic). I could barely make an inch-long line before the paint would run out. Granted, the canvas panels I bought were quite cheap so that might have been the problem! So I searched for a smoother board to try, and I found these masonite painting panels. For me, they work great. I like the smoother surface. The board holds the paint well and I like how the paint looks on the board when it dries. The surface isn't overly slick, but I can at least paint more than an inch at a time before needing to re-load my brush. The price is great -- I was able to buy several boards for both my kids and I to paint on. I'll definitely be buying more!

Thirsty surface, not great for oils
I have not enjoyed painting on this surface. I bought a bunch for a plein air workshop and thankfully had back up canvas panels because this surface just sucks the paint in (the paint does not sit on top of it). It is also so dry that i have a fingernails-on-the-chalkboard sense-memory of trying to work the paint on it. I like gessoed masonite as a surface/ground for oil but this is not what i am used to. It also is fairly soft so the edges chip and bend. The quality would be fine for just skills practicing but not for a work you'd want to sell or archive. I don't recommend it for oils, haven't tried it for acrylics and wonder whether it would be ok for pastels. I will use the ones i have left for pastel sketches.

Many defects
Bar code sticker was placed on the gesso surface of the panel and even if it could have been removed, it rendered the item unusable except for practice work. The gesso was uneven and dirty, there were grease stains on the gesso surface which was not protected by an archival sleeve.very dissapointing

Five Stars
Smooth surface accepts details beautifully. My favorite support medium, and offered at a reasonable price.
