Not only is it a new adventure for a popular set of characters of old, its also a fun, breezy family movie, that the kids in particular will enjoy. Starring Jason Lee (of My Name Is Earl fame), Alvin and the Chipmunks mixes in live action and CGI chipmunks (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) in a story that sees that moved from their natural habitat into the midst of the big city. The plot then becomes as predictable as youd expect, but theres still plenty of fun to be had anyway. For Alvin and the Chipmunks has plenty in its corner. Its funny, first and foremost, and moves along at a good pace, never forgetting that its prime job is to entertain its audience. And thats something it easily manages to do, wrapping everything up by remembering not to outstay its welcome, either. Considering that Alvin and the Chipmunks enjoy a legion of fans that stretch back decades, its perhaps not a surprise after all that the film enjoyed the success it did. But whats pleasing is that the spirit of the source material, in spite of its contemporary setting, is adhered to, and theres fun for all in the end product. --Jon Foster Review: Family fun and entertainment - When I ordered this movie, I wasn't sure what to expect. The reviews on desertcart were good, but generally the film had been panned by critics as one of the worst films of 2007, despite it's major financial success. Bah, just shows how much the critics know! I finally got the chance to see this film the other night, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Fun, cute, inoffensive and pure family entertainment. (OK, a couple of bathroom jokes, but they were not taken to any extremes) There was humour where it applied in the movie, but also some moments of emotion - such as when Theodore had a nightmare and Dave let him stay with him for the night. To be honest, the only problem I might have with the movie is that the "boys" were sometimes hard to understand with their squeaky voices... still, the actors enunciated their lines pretty well, so generally this wasn't a problem. Anyway, long and short of it is that this movie is unjustly underrated and definitely worth the watch. Review: Great Family Film - The adults of the family not having seen Alvin & The Chipmunks we went to the cinema for my son's 10th birthday to see Alvin & The Chipmunks 2 The Squeakle. Came home and immediately ordered No.1. Watched this afternoon. Great family film - lots of laughs and aah's, these little fellas are sooooo cute.

a big hit with the children
I bought this for my 7 year old boy and he found it so funny that he keeps watching it over and over again. I also have a 12 year old boy and he thinks its great too. I also watched it and thought some bits were quite amusing, (once I got used to the way they talk)!!! Excellent buy.

AAAAAAAALLLLLLLVVVVVVVVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNN
Oh my god, this is the best version of the chipmunks' adoption story. Like in the cartoon, Dave is struggling to write a hit song and the boys are living in the wild. When they meet, it's a little rocky at first. And when Dave expresses concern at "Where are your parents?", Simon and Alvin reassure him after chipmunks are a week born your parents leave you to fend for yourself. And, basically by testing their limits Alvin, Simon and Theo are helping Dave learn how to love unconditionally. The funny part was when Alvin is taking a shower in the dishwasher and says "Uh I'm waiting for the rinse cycle." LOL

Love the Chipmunks
When my daughter was young, she used to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon and loved it. My son however has never been privvy to a screening of Alvin in cartoon form, so when the film came out on DVD i got it for him. This is a brilliant piece of escapism for young and old alike, younger children will love repeat performances-fabulous. V.Potts

Chiptastic!!!
I was a huge fan of The Cipmunks as a child and I was worried that the film would be a real dissapointment. I was so wrong! This film is fantastic the chipmunks are so cute and funny. Jason Lee is perfect as Dave Seville and all of the classic songs are there. This is a funny, heartwarming and cool film, enjoy!

The movie is for children, but much of the humor is directed at an older crowd who will find the movie imminently watchable. The jokes are funny and the CGI quality is first-rate. David Cross is a total scene-stealer as the movie villain (record exec Ian Hawke who wants to milk the popularity of the Chipmunks before their novelty wears off). Jason Lee does a good job as their adoptive father. The CGI versions of the chipmunk characters are 1000 times better than the weird hybrid animal/child cartoon characters from the television show. The chipmunks act like smart-alec, misbehaving children but it is clear they are animals. Alvin actually looks like a chipmunk. Simon with his flat face looks more like an ugly gopher. Theodore with his giant triangle head, lumpy bloated body and huge butt resembles a groundhog. Hardest part of the movie was how horrible the chipmunks are – they behave like selfish, entitled, spoiled, bratty, arrogant, messy, greedy, petulant, lazy parasites. They considered themselves superior to other "filthy" species, trash Dave's apartment, get him fired and lie to embarrass him. The chipmunks flaunt Dave's well-intended rules (no pigging out on dessert and going to bed on time) without any consequences. Ultimately they abandon him to live with Ian in a bigger house with unlimited sweets and tons of toys. The chipmunks are devoid of any moral core and lack the good hearts inherent in other anthropomorphic fictional characters such as Paddington Bear. No learning arch or character-development. They just do want they want all the time and are never punished or held accountable because Dave is such a sad-sack loser, and Ian considers the massive indulgence a business necessity. In a typical children's movie (think the Secret Garden or Nanny McPhee), a spoiled indulged child comes round in the end. Not here. The worst is gluttonous Theodore. In addition to constantly shoving food in his mouth (he is Augustus Gloop in rodent form), he is whiny, needy, clueless, clingy, pushy, stupid, a liar, self-centered, an egotist (he brags about his ability to press a car horn) and always needs someone to coddle, cater, help or wait for him. He is wholly dependent on his brothers (Simon the Enabler and Alvin the Savior) and is so fat and slow he cannot even climb without their assistance. Alvin and Simon indulge him rather than tease or pick on him as one would expect older brothers to do. The movie would be better if the chipmunk characters been more likeable, or at least been made to appreciate what they had. But the CGI and clever dialog still make the movie fun. The Christmas present exchange scene is particularly a hoot.
