Does the job
As a war strategy game, I would have to say it fulfils its purpose and is good fun to play if you have a decent amount of free time to play it. The actual battling side of things was good as it is quite easy to navigate the battlefield and move your troops to where you want them at the appropriate times. Some of the game features outside of the battling were a bit confusing and made the game incredibly difficult to play, even on the normal difficulty setting, for example you can quite easily find yourself at war with 3 or 4 neighbouring countries at once despite showing no aggression towards any of them and you are subsequently forced to defend yourself constantly whilst your councillors and the pope are demanding that you conquer certain cities. If you disappoint your councillors and the pope this further weakens your standing and leaves you less able to defend yourself and this cycle can continue indefinitely if you're unlucky.

Dodgy install
It was hard to review this as the games okay it's just the discs at fault. I wasn't able to install both discs, after inserting disc 2 Steam then told me it was ready to play whilst showing only 63% installed. I rang the Sega number on the leaflet, but just received a recorded message which was no help at all. I then contacted support through the website and sent them a DxDiag report which they requested. The only thing they could find wrong was an out of date audio driver. Though Email support was very polite and helpful within their limitations, I realised this was going to be the standard computer equipment and software fault response. If you have faulty software then your computer is to blame. If you have a faulty computer then your software is to blame, if you have a problem with your Internet connection then your home setup is to blame.I wasn't going to start messing around with my computer settings as only a fortnight before I had installed Assassins Creed IV 3 discs and Empire 2 discs with no problem. I decided then to try it on my laptop and got exactly the same result. Support then offered me the Steam download version which once the Steam code was in I could get anyway by just removing the discs and downloading. I had already tested this to see if there was a problem with the game as such which there wasn't, but explained to them I wanted a working hard copy which I had purchased.Amazon were excellent when I phoned them and explained and put a replacement package in the post requesting I return the original. Regrettably the replacement did the same thing, I felt it unfair to ask Amazon to send yet another, so wrote to Sega and The Creative Assembly. It is now a month since writing and I have not had as much as an acknowledgement, poor show Sega and The Creative Assembly, customer service does not seem to be part of your remit. I guess I'm stuck with the download, I have used downloads for many programmes but that is what in those cases I bought.

Stood the test of time
Given its age the campaign holds up well. Perfect for those of us without a super expensive gaming pc. In tutorial there is a glitch that stops you moving, but a quick google provided the answer.
