Nice quality leather. The pen holder is open at the bottom which makes the pen easier to insert, but might allow slimmer pens and/or those with no clips to slip through. I have the holder on the front cover, but this does mean that the strap on the inside affects how I can write on the reverse of each page (at least at the front of the journal). I am thinking of inserting a sheet of stiff card at the front to reduce the effect of the ridge caused by the strap. Wouldn't affect you if you only wrote on one side of the page

I loved it but lost the A5 notebook about a week later so I can't tell you long term. But I ordered another less expensive one for my new notebook. Good quality can't speak of durability. Wish I had another .
