Q: Which of these sponges be closest to a half inch?

If you’re talking about the hole in the middle, it is about a half inch.

Q: Can the 0.8 intake sponge fit my topfin 40 filter

It should be ok for a 40 gph HOB They are a little big for my 10 gph HOB but i put two rubber bands on it and it stays put. And the intake for a 40 isnt much larger that the 10. So my guess is that it should fit about right without the rubber bands. But if not just take 2 hair rubber bands and put then in the sponge and it holds it on tight.

Q: Is this a carbon filter?

This is not a carbon filter. This is a pre-filter sponge that goes over the inlet tube for HOB (hang on back) filter systems to prevent baby fish/shrimp from getting sucked up the tube and into the filter.

Q: What is the ppi (porosity)?

I couldnt tell you how big the holes are in the sponges. But I can tell you that I use this spongs in a tank with Shrimp. I currently plenty if baby shrimp and I dont seem to have issues with the babies being pulled through the sponge and into the filter as I have a lot of them. So it is small enough holes to prevent small shrimp from going through it. But it does allow good flow as my filter flow is steady and doesnt seem to be slowed by it.
