Truly a classic - get this version
The game is dated of course, having been released in 2002, but it still holds up well, and the latest mods virtually bring it up to date to compare with modern games. This is a good guide to modding it: http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/. Most of his links are to PES and don't work but you can get most of them from http://mw.modhistory.com/ and http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/. Also he gives vital advice on making sure you have the right patches as the original game has lots of bugs. It's also worth looking at this site which has lots of good advice on mods as well as being hilarious (though very rude): http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html#morrowind_patchedThere are two almost identical versions of this game, both on sale at Amazon. The only visible difference is the Ubisoftt logo (that is this one) or the Mastertronics logo (the other one). However, inside the box, the Ubisoft version gives you the three discs (Morrowind, Tribune and Bloodmoon) and does not require Steam, the other requires Steam and only gives you an installation disc. I often use Steam but for this game I would strongly recommend the Ubisoft version. As to the game, the lore and history have a sophistication beyond any game I have experienced (fans of Planescape Torment make similar claims but I found it too dated to play). As you progress you read various reports and mini-books about the history and the background to the unfolding events, you see different perspectives. Right and wrong are not clear. Even the facts are in dispute. Whoever masterminded this deserves a medal. Most novels don't present such a richly ambiguous view of their world.Games seem to follow a long term trend towards offering faster progress. It is as though the market has become progressively less patient. You may therefore find that Morrowind feels slow. For example some of the quests on the main path require finding not one item but several different ones in different parts of the world, and some of these will spawn multiple subquests, all of which require travelling to different places by foot. If you don't like this there are several mods that will speed up travel without being true cheats - All boat ports, All silt strider ports, Multiple teleport marking, and Run faster.

Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition (PC)
I'm not a big fan of RPG's in general; there are far too many to choose from and they all seem to be too similar. Taking a gamble, I purchased this game; at first it took some getting used to - i.e. it was hard and I died a lot! But after a while, it became clear that this game was something special, offering total freedom to roam and stick your nose into other peoples business with varying results...The music and sound effects are excellent and the possibilities for character development are vast, with your only restriction being your race, which you select at the start of the game.To cut a long story short, if you like a rich immersive gaming experience, are looking for a new challenge or something different, and have some time (a lot) on your hands, then this is definately THE game to buy!!! - UNMISSABLE

Game of the Year - Great Fun
I got a copy of the standard Morrowind in our local charity shop and played it a lot. However, this GOTY edition is much better. A lot of the bugs had been sorted out. This came with Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions too which not only sorted out the frustrations with the Journal entry system (Google it and you'll understand), but extends an already huge game yet again - twice. Morrowind is an open-world game and the graphics are really good, especially since I upgraded my PC recently. It plays on Win7 very well - although I understand some laptops with Win7 have a problem with it. GOTY came with a useful map, but the great thing about the game is that you choose what you do next. You can wander around picking up plant and fungi samples for sale to merchants and as you gradually become trained in potion making, create your own potions using the ingredients found on your travels. There are huge amounts of weapons, magic scrolls, armour, items and books. There is also plenty of help online if you can't find something out. The best thing for me is that this game doesn't involve getting queued up on Steam. My internet connection is just too slow and cuts out randomly to get involved with any online/downloadable games. So the Skyrim game is forever unobtainable, unless I move house of course. I have played Oblivion and Shivering Isles too, but this is where it all began.

Well to be blunt...
I am a massive RPG'er always have, always probably will be. The most striking thing about Morrowind is the intensity of character creation, the sheer depth of character development and the diversity of your chosen path. Do you become a werewolf ? a vampire ? or just be a plain old normal race. The sound is immersing and the environment is intimidating. HOWEVER!!!, there is an obvious lack of variation to gameplay. I have had it now for 2 weeks, level11 warrior absolutely knocking the hell out of everything....its too easy and I am getting bored....so 3* because it has a lot of good points but a lot of not bad, but not so good points.

OLD BUT GOLD
Great game to own on discs. This version has all of the dlc for morrowind - Tribunal and Bloodmoon. The base game is amazing standalone and then you have the bonus of these two great new areas to explore full of quests too. This should word as long as you have the recommended system specs and of course a cd-rom drive. My copy came with a map of the world that I still display on my wall to this day.

Steam required, hideous dated characters, rotten game save.
I bought this as the reviews said that Steam was not required for this game. But this is not true. As soon as I put the DVD in the drive it connected to Steam. I don't like Steam as it means I cannot give or sell the game on to anyone, and also I have to be connected to the internet in order to play. So I have been sadly misled. I was expecting a much higher quality of play as it has really ugly blocky characters considering it is not that old a game. Also having ploughed through the beginning I was most upset to find that the game had not saved despite my setting it to do so, and I do not feel like going through all that again. So I am unlikely to continue with it. Waste of money and time. Very disappointed.
