The Sun and Her Flowers: Rupi Kaur

I have read Rupi's first poetry book, Milk and Honey, and I was amused by the way she writes and expresses her feelings. A poem could be 3 words but these words are so powerful that touch you really deep. The Sun and Her Flowers, the second book of Rupi, is equaly powerful and emotional, covering subjects such as self-love/self-hate, love, death and leaving your country. You should read this book, very inspirational quotes and beautiful illustrations.

Some heavier personal themes mixed with light insights

Honestly I had never thought I’d enjoy poetry, my goodness this book was beautiful to read, especially as a woman! I read it all in one day I just couldn’t put it down!

'The Sun and Her Flowers' is a marvelous and astonishing read, it is jam-packed with numerous animations and illustrations which enables the reader to visualize their own journey in something called `life`. Moreover, it presents vividly several themes including: trauma, loss, abortion, love etc that will capture the readers eyes in no-time as we have all undertaken English Literature/Language, its very similar to the poems we all encounter and endure as part of our academic studies. I highly endorse it to the readers and possibly include this book as part of the school curriculum education system across the globe as it does mention and talk about immigration too which I strongly believe needs to be taught to raise awareness and to just simply heal individuals. Rupi Kaur has been an author that I've wanted to read for a while but there was so much negative comments about her that I kept putting it off. I finally decided to pick up her books when she brought out this beautiful cloth bound hardback edition of her second book, The Sun and Her Flowers. I am really glad that I decided to read this because it was a brilliant read that I couldn't put down and I read it in one sitting. The array of topics that she writes about in her poetry is mind blowing. Her culture and childhood are so rich with emotion that I may not be able to relate to but it didn't matter. Having my eyes opened to what certain people have to go through was the power in this book. She is a true inspiration of how to not let your past define you. She is a strong amazing woman who has written a strong selection of poetry.

This is the second of Rupi's books I bought and it seriously helped me through some difficult times.

I kept seeing accounts on Instagram and boards on Pinterest just dedicated to this book so I checked it out and sampled some pages. I struggle with mental health issues and this poetry book has really helped and inspired me with some of my feelings, especially towards love and relationships I had with men I was dating. As we all know if something romantic ends and you get treated horribly you feel like crap for weeks even months, but reading the section dedicated to healing and moving on really helped me to understand and realise that it wasnt my fault and I cannot controll other peoples actions, no matter how hard I want too. If you're struggling with similar issues or just want to read a well written poetry book then pick this up!!!
