Sony BDP-S1700 SMART Blu-Ray and DVD Player with Built-In Apps - Black

The player was really easy to integrate with the rest of my existing set up. Just followed the set up instructions. Its compact and unobstusive size is a bonus and does not detract from its performance.

After buying a new Sony tv i decided that that the Sony dvd player that we have had for several years needed upgrading, having looked at many it became clear that a Blu Ray player could be had for the same price as a dvd player, so not wanting 4K ability and having the new Sony tv i bought this little box and i am extremely happy that i picked it, it is very small and discreet but it packs a lot in, apart from the obvious disc player it also has a whole host of app's that make it very smart First trying it out with a dvd of Lord Of The Rings i was very impressed by the quality and sharpness of the picture, audio playing through my Orbitsound T12 was even more impressive with the rumbles and explosions of the battle scenes right there in the room but with the rest of the soundstage clearly audible as well the first Blu Ray played was the BFG, as would be expected the picture quality is superb on the 1080p tv and again the sound simply blows you away, the little box is very quick to respond to the remote, something that i had not appreciated with the previous dvd player as i now realise how slow that had been, the remote itself is also quite small but it is perfectly sized and shaped to make it easy to use there are many app's on this player including Amazon video and Netflix, which has it's own dedicated quick launch button and the other app's can be sorted into favourites etc i am extremely happy with this Blu Ray player and considering it cost no more than many dvd players i think it is an absolute bargain and i recommend it for any one who like me has no desire to get into 4K just yet but would like to get the most out their dvd and Blu ray discs.

Nice player, not multiregion

Amazing picture and sound quality even when playing a standard DVD, very modern unit which conceals the disc slot until you press eject when the front panel folds down and reveals the disc tray behind it, im really impressed by this unit as it seems way advanced compared to its rivals products of similar price, i got a similar blu ray player made by one of sonys closest rivals which costs a fiver less than this unit but this unit seems far more stylish and advanced than that one by far, sony have really put a lot of thought into the design of this unit as it does look great without the visible disc tray door with a very clever eject operation that reminds me of the first time i seen a vw eos hard top folding roof in operation, this really is one amazing product and a huge step forward in biu ray/DVD player design worth every penny.

Works well and probably the smallest blu-ray player you can get. Worked on every blu-ray so far and those range from old ones to new ones. Movie menus are quick and responsive. Picture quality seems to be excellent and the remote gives you all the controls you need. Overall, this is an extremely capable small form player.

Ironically the last thing I'll be using this unit for is playing Blu-ray discs, given the advent of streaming services. I bought it primarily to play my legacy DVD collection and for access to Netflix and Amazon Video (my Now TV box supporting neither of these services, and my Chromecast only supporting Netflix officially, though Amazon Video can be mirrored to that device with limited success). Having said all this, I'd noticed a trend in the last year or so for some of my favourite bands to release live show recordings on Blu-ray only, so came to the conclusion it was time to bow to the inevitable! This Sony box meets and probably exceeds my expectations. Two immediately notable aspects are how quiet it is in operation, and how quickly it responds to button presses on the remote control. I also like the Netflix instant-access button on the remote - press this and the player quickly fires up with the Netflix app running, and my tv powers up (if on standby) and switches over to the relevant HDMI source The remote has another button which can be assigned to a favourite app, which is handy. (I've assigned Amazon Video to mine.) The only negatives so far are that the claimed DVD 'upscaling' isn't that earth-shattering on DVDs that were of relatively poor quality to start with, and the Internet setup was somewhat of a faff to complete successfully - a not uncommon issue it would seem having googled it, and mainly caused in my view by a lack of meaningful documentation and an interface written in a peculiar style of English that suggests it wasn't a first language for its author! But having got it set up, it's been stable since, thankfully. The Playstation Now access could be a useful bonus for some. Overall then, for what I paid, I'm happy.

It is for use with my Sony TV, which does not have a blue ray player built in. Does what I bought it for and it is simple to use. Great product. Well, it IS a Sony!
