Q: Is there any protection if the batteries die on you in the field/range? I.E. What happens to noises above the 82dB range with no batteries?

If the batteries die or you leave them on and forget(as I have done) They will function as regular ear protection but they will lose the ability to amplify regular sounds. Basically the best part about these is the ability to hold normal or even whispered conversation and hear really quiet noises such as twigs breaking or footsteps in the snow. To restate my answer they would be great ear pro even if they were dead- Chris

Q: Has anyone used these for mowing the lawn? Does anyone know the size of the MP3 plugin?

I've used mine for yard care and with them on they block out the noise of a lawnmower, weed-eater, edger and leaf blower(with or without having the power turned on). They work great and turned on they allow you to hear what's going on around you like traffic on the street, someone trying to get your attention or a dog coming up to you. All without letting the noise of whatever lawn equipment your using bothering you or interfering. The headphone jack is 3.5mm which is your normal headphone jack size.

The package comes with a 39 inch connecting cord, with a 3.5 mm jack on both ends. These are the standard earphone jacks, and it plugs right into my ipod and the earphone jack on my Midland GXT-1000 GMRS/FRS two-way radios. I listen to music while I mow the lawn. As long as you turn on the earmuffs, but keep the volume level at its lowest, you can hear music without the microphones picking up ambient noise.

Q: Would this work as hearing protection from gun fire? As firearms have an instant crack when fired, is this fast enough to shutoff the sound?

THE SPEAKERS/MICROPHONE NEVER SHUT OFF COMPLETELY..... The sound that the speakers play won't go higher than 82db (ear safe) the muffs themselves reduce all outside noise by 22db If you're in a constantly noisy environment like loud music or constant gun shots the microphones/speakers don't ever turn off that part is confusing, in that case the sound being played stays at a constant 82db, so you can still hear things instead of all the outside sound being reduced by 22db When shooting targets like steel etc. you can hear the impact on the target. Hope that makes sense.
