A Story Written by Dickens in 1866, a Perfect Christmas Story for Those Who Enjoy Haunting Stories
After reading this relatively short story of 56 pages, I had so many thoughts about this one. This story begins with a man whose name is never shared, but happens to see a man down below and calls out to him ’Halloa! Below there!’ which draws the attention of the man, who works as a signalman. Despite calling out to him, the signalman remains focused, staring as if almost mesmerized by something he believes he sees.Continuing to climb down the path to the tracks, a rather steep and hazardous trail, the signalman greets this man, and they enter the small building with very little furnishings. At more than one point he stands almost nervously, and looks down the tunnel. The unnamed man finds his behavior a little strange. When he returns the next day, the signalman shares his story.Dickens wrote this gem in 1866, long before my grandfather was born, but I’d wanted to read this because my grandfather had worked for the railroad and was also a fan of Dickens. I’ve been to the station he worked at, not that far from the house he grew up in, which is where my father lived growing up, as well. I will never know if he had the opportunity to read this, but I’d like to think he did, and is smiling, knowing that I loved it, as I’m sure he did, as well.

Four and a half stars from me
Quick read with a sort of twist at the end. Text covers 35 pages, the rest contain publisher's info and Seth's minimalist drawings.

A Christmas Ghost Story.
I loved this ghost story. Dickens knew how to write a good ghost story. If you like Christmas Carrol, read this story.

Lame 19th Century British Story
Not a "thriller" as we understand the term today. The story itself is lame, and then doesn't make sense when you think about it afterward. Definitely a period piece. I had more fun reading it in a British voice, as in "Hello gov'ner" and "what's all this, then".
