Like the answer in light vein
FIELD MARSHAL.............................................................The book brings out the complete personality of Sam Maneckshaw. Some of the events are portrayed differently in some other references.Like the answer in light vein,"Right Now,Sweetie."to Indira Gandhi when she proposed to launch a strike in the East in1971.The irritation caused by Kaul on patriotic grounds. In his autobiography Kaul gives only one third of the account. The book is perfectly linear in describing the events as such. That Sam received eight bullets should have been brought outwith some more details.........................................................The pattern of presentation is extremely good.Instead of opening the account with Sam's ancestors and gliding through the education and career of Sam, the book floodlights his glorious moments in his life .Nevertheless his early days are also given at the appropriate point in succinct style.I am reminded of M.C.Chagla's ROSES IN DECEMBER..........................................................................Should we choose to replace the word 'Sam' with 'I'the narration easily slips to the category of autobiography. It is written in the same style Sam would have wished. No difficult words. No meandering style.StraIght and simple..........................................................Thomas Babington Macaulay defines the style ."............The first rule of all writing …is that the words used by the writer shall besuch as most fully and precisely convey his meaningto the great body of his readers. All considerations about the purity and dignity of styleought to bend to this consideration. To write what is not understood in its whole force, for fear of using some wordwhich was unknown to Swift or Dryden, would be, I think,as absurd as to build an Observatory like that at Oxford, from which it is impossible to observe, only for the purpose of exactly preservingthe proportions of the Temple of the Winds at Athens. That a word which is appropriate to a particular idea, which everybody high and low uses to express that idea, and which expresses that idea with a completenesswhich is not equalled by any other single word …should be banished from writing, seems to me a mere throwing away of power........."..................................................................I strongly feel that if we are looking for an example for Macaulay's definitionthe prose of Hanadi foots the bill.................................................................Dr.Johnson is at the other end of the spectrum. We shall consign him for scholars.................................................I am of the firm conviction that the instant bookshould be recommended for the pupil in school for its rich content andcascading style of presentation.

Not a good read
Expected a book on Sam Bahadur to be much better, both in style and editing. The author is confused about the sequence of events to be followed. Even the date of taking over and relinquishing the office of Field Marshal are not clear. The author says that Sam retired on 15th January and on the next page says he left his office in South Block on 26th January.
