Excellent TV remote for elderly loved ones!
We purchased this remote to help my elderly father who was having great difficulty in operating his TV remote furnished by his programming provider.....which had way to many buttons for him to negotiate. It had gotten so we were having to go over to his house at least 3 times a week to get his TV back on track. In his defense the old remote had 42 buttons on it!!! SERIOUSLY? This new universal remote is awesome! You can program each of the buttons to do whatever task you need. We had 3 extra buttons that were not needed, so my husband programmed all of them to go to the channel guide so no matter how off track he got, he is always able to get back to the channel guide and able to continue watching TV. It was a little difficult to program, but we pushed through it and am very, very happy with the end result. My Dad has been using the remote for about 6 weeks and has not had any problems at all. It has restored a bit of dignity and independence.

Nice Easy to Clean, Learning Remote With Surperb Customer Service
Update (9/29/2018):-------------------------Unfortunately, remote stopped working properly. The volume up/down buttons would only work intermittently. I checked to make sure the batteries are fresh and even reprogrammed the buttons, but still not working. I decided to change my rating from 5 stars to 3 due to reliability issues and decided to use a different remote control.-------------------------Original review follows:The remote control that came with my tv set is not any good. When pressing the remote's buttons, they only register sometimes. I switched to using a learning remote control that controlled about 4 devices. This was a good remote, but when I came across the EasyClean Smart, Learning remote, I liked the simplicity of only a few buttons and just for a TV set. I believe that for many times, less is more. This remote has a bit of both worlds. On one hand, nothing fancy but just tv common controls. Yet at the same time, this is a learning remote. So, if all the controls of a current remote aren't on already functional, keys can be taught from the teaching remote to this learning remote. That may sound complicated, but it is not. Instructions which are included on a sheet of paper are clearly written and easy to understand. In my situation, I have a ViewSonic brand TV. First, I tried the automatic search, which consisted of turning on my TV set. Pressing and holding down the power button on the EasyClean remote. When the TV turned off, I pressed the mute button on the EasyClean remote to save the found tv settings. In my case, this only saved some of the button functions, but not all. For the remaining, I taught my learning remote the remaining buttons by following the instructions. Total time was about 30 minutes.I found the feel of the remote did take a day or two to get used to. The keypad is a membrane type keypad that is stuck on top of the circuit board. Thus, instead of more bouncy buttons, the buttons require a harder press. They they are raised up a bit and not totally flat which does help. If you've seen remote keypads at hospitals, this one is similar. I assume for ease of cleaning.According the the pictures of the EasyClean remote, cleaning can be done by running under faucet water, placing in the dishwasher or under water in dishwasher detergent. I didn't put in a dishwasher, but tried washing the keypad under faucet water which worked well. I then tried under water in dishwasher detergent, but had an issue. Mainly, the remote didn't keep the water out. Opening the battery compartment, the batteries felt moist. Then the LED on the remote started flickering and then didn't turn on.I tried letting the remote dry out, but that didn't work, so I contacted continuus (the manufacturer) through Amazon's message center. I contacted them during the holidays, just after Christmas. To my pleasant surprise, I heard back from them within an hour or two. They said, if the remote doesn't work after me letting it dry, let them know and they will send a new replacement, free of charge, the next day. That's the route I took. How's that for someone standing behind their product? Pretty impressive! As I type, the replacement remote has arrived. I haven't set it up yet. I do expect it to work as before. As for being submersed underwater, I'm not sure. The problem is, I'm afraid to take the risk, so may just stick to cleaning under the faucet or just wiping clean. Though continuus said the remote should be submersible. In summary, if you are looking for a simple, easy to clean, yet learning TV remote, this may the one for you.Pros:- learns from your existing remote- easy to follow instructions- big, easy to read buttons- great, friendly, customer service- reasonably pricedCons:- buttons takes some getting used to, a bit stiffer than most- batteries takes a bit more effort to change (designed this way to hopefully, not get wet)- dunk the remote underwater at the remote's own riskThis remote together with excellent customer service, I give 5 Stars.

Water resistent tv remote
This works okay. I own a newer Samsung 50inch flatscreen. The remote that came with the tv stopped working after 2 years so I wanted to look for a universal remote that was easier to use for an older person. This universal remote got 4/5 stars and decent reviews. I read the instructions. It did not help that Samsung had like 10 different codes that may or may not work. A lot of trial and error. Some codes it would turn on and off, but the volume wouldn't work. Sometimes the volume would work but it wouldn't turn on. Sometimes the tv turned off, but would not turn on. I tried the auto set function, and looked at the You Tube instructions on my phone. The autoset function did what the instructions said they would, but I could never get the tv to turn back on with the new remote. Found one code to handle all the functions "finally!" Turning off is great. Volume is great. Turning the tv on, yeah that's still hit or miss but does work after about 5-10 seconds of patience.

Works well after programming
---My review only mostly relevant to those who want to "train" it from an existing remote.---On the plus side, it is very good on the quality that is most important to me: Does it have a broad and strong enough beam so that you can point it fairly casually in the direction of the TV and have it work reliably? It performs very decently in this respect. (I am replacing a remote that was very aggravating in the requirement to point it directly at the right spot. I especially want to be able to mute or change the volume pretty much instantly without fiddling around.)On the down side, I found the "teaching/training" (programming) to be very tedious. For one thing, it does not have a dedicated button to put it into learning mode so you have to use special key combinations of regular keys to switch it into and out of learning mode. The style of keys is fine for regular use but not good for the tedious task of programming. The instructions are written in good English put are not sufficiently explicit on the fine details of the programming procedure. I am a technical type by profession and have owned several learning remotes. The others were much easier to program. This is a task that I believe most ordinary people can accomplish with a bit of aggravation. People who are aware that they aren't very good with this sort of thing should look for a different device. (I did not program the numbers since I don't really need them; the programming is just too tedious to do more than is necessary, imo.)Obviously, I had issues, and yet I am still giving four stars. It is an inexpensive device that looks like it will serve well for my purpose. A half hour of aggravation will be quickly forgotten going forward.
