Freedom HiFi-M8 redefines the portable DAC/Amp. This innovative, category-defining product sets a standard others will be judged by. They have done that before with their award-winning MicPort Pro and DACport. They did it again with HiFi-M8. A unique combination of sound quality, output power and battery life, HiFi-M8 sets you free to explore your world, audiophile sound in the pocket. HiFi-M8 (pronounced "Mate") creates a perfect listening experience anywhere you are-at work, on a train or in the gym; helping you through the workday or soothing you at home. Fidelity HiFi-M8 is a USB DAC and an audiophile sound card for your iPhone, iPad and iPod. It extracts digital audio from computers and Apple's portable devices and converts it to analog, for purest sound reproduction. HiFi-M8 is also a powerful headphone amplifier with balanced outputs. Gone are the days when you needed to carry a separate DAC, Amp and a battery. HiFi-M8 has all components built-in and carefully matched to preserve sonic fidelity. HiFi-M8 enables audiophile on-the-go listening by combining 24-bit/192kHz audio quality, over 6 hours of battery life, balanced headphone output and multiple sonic shaping features within a single, integrated, portable device. Flexibility HiFi-M8 is a highly flexible product with two input options (M8 and M8 LX). If you don't use an iPhone, pick the LX, which replaces iDevice input with an optical TOSLINK (SPDIF) input - pe

Perfect except one small problem
Sonically: Pretty amazing device honestly. I'm not going to really go into a lot of nitty gritty details about the device since there are already comprehensive reviews out there for this thing and I'll let them do the talking rather than parrot the information (Jude from Head-Fi TV and Tyll from InnerFidelity on Youtube do a good job). It's completely neutral aside from some tone controls on the back (boost bass/treble up to 6dB) and very low-noise amplification. From my experience with some similarly priced desktop setups it's about on par with fidelity, which is impressive. It can drive just about everything with 1.5 Watts except maybe some of the Hifiman headphones which are notorious for needing high-powered amps, as it was designed for audiophiles in mind for their big headphones. For me, I use primarily the Alpha Dogs from MrSpeakers with the M8 and am really happy with it. Great sound, more than enough power and can't hear any noise: completely black like it should be. Now it isn't designed for very sensitive headphones, so if your headphones are below 20 Ohms you're probably going to hear a hiss even on the lowest gain setting.Portability: The statement about fitting this in your pocket is laughable, but it is definitely portable since it's small enough. 6 Hours give or take for battery life. It's especially impressive given how powerful the amp is in this thing: you're not going to find a more powerful one in any compact setup like this to be honest, and you don't even need a more powerful one for most headphones anyway. So it's great for plane rides except overseas, where then you might need a longer battery life and I'd suggest the Cypher Labs theorem 720.Other: Something of note that doesn't seem to be addressed too often is the charging. You can effectively use this as a desktop DAC/AMP if you want to because the battery will disconnect from charging after it is full, only connecting on occasion in order to top off the battery. So it's also a great option if you want a compact unit for your desk which is essentially a desktop setup in a box. Its great for student's like myself that are either stuck in small dorms or small apartments and don't have a lot of desk space.Compatibility: Note that there are 8 different versions of the M8, half of which support Apple devices and half that instead opt for a SPDIF input, and then four different options for the front with headphone connections. This is the most common choice that supports Apple products and USB connections to your computer. For computers, mac products natively support this for audio, for Windows you need to install the audio driver from CEntrance's website. Android will also be supported through the USB for computer input using an OTG cable, but it'll vary with compatibility. The Xperia Z2 and Z3 devices (and definitely any future devices from Sony) natively support USB audio out and are a great pairing for this. Otherwise with other phones, such as the popular Samsung phones, they will only work using the USB Audio Player Pro application for music playing and only works within the application, so no Youtube watching for instance. You'll have do some research on compatibility with the M8.Problem(???): Now there is one small problem I have had with the device and it's the charger. There isn't enough plastic on the edge of the connector to protect the conducting piece on the inside, so if you accidentally touch the thing to metal, such as the outside of the casing of your nice little M8, it's going to create a nice little firework sparkler show to go with it. It's a fire hazard honestly if you're not careful with the charger. I hope I haven't been the only one to miss the charging port when trying to plug it in and notice the issue. I plan on E-mailing CEntrance about it at some point, as I've had the M8 so far for 6 months. I haven't found it really that much of an issue to detract a star yet (until I burn my place down, at least).

Doesn't actually support Android but otherwise a superior product
I have to get this out right off before I start the review: This device is NOT android compatible. You can download an expensive for-pay app in the Android store that lets you play local media stored on your device through the DAC, but this device does NOT support the USB Audio standard. On the other hand, its support for iDevice (iPhone, iPad) is superb. You can plug it into your iDevice and get audio out of it instantly, bypassing the internal DAC of the iDevice. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, on to the actual functionality of the device:This thing is A-MA-ZING.The really cool thing is that the signal to noise ratio and jitter are so good that silent passages in audio recordings are actually silent. No hiss, no electronic noise, nothing. Dead silent. The components this DAC/amp are made from are top quality. The switches are tight and snappy. The case itself is solid and thick without being too heavy and the bevels cradle and protect your iPhone. The sound quality is indescribable. You get that effect you can only get with very good sound reproduction devices where you can actually hear the shape of the venue when listening to an acoustic recording. If you like EDM or other electronic music, especially ambient and chillstep I highly recommend pairing this DAC/amp with a set of Mad Dog headphones. It's a killer combo that will put you in a state of electronica bliss.Edit: I got a Nexus 7 2013 and installed Android 5.0 Lollipop. With this tablet and Android 5.0 I get sound on the Hi-Fi M8.Edit: I also have a HTC One M8. About one in ten sessions when I plug in the Hi-fi M8 it works. The rest of the time the app appears to be playing audio but no sound comes through to the headphones. Whether or not the Hifi M8 works seems to be completely random. It just happens to work when it's plugged in. If the Hifi M8 is unplugged, powered off, or the phone is rebooted it stops working and no amount of rebooting, re-plugging the device or switching the cables around will start it working again. It just works when it wants to, and doesn't when it doesn't want to.

You will love it.
I plugged the HiFi M8 into my ipad and then my Beyerdynamics TP5's into the HiFi M8. Listened to the first song then got back up off the floor for the 2nd. The sound was so incredible it knocked me off my chair. I heard things I had never heard before. Each note the cello played was articulate and spacious. The bass had shape and I could hear runs I hadn't heard before. The voices sounded like the person was singing right in the room. You will love it.

Great sound quality
After a couple of years, the battery life seems to have dropped off about 30%. Great sound quality and love the direct connection to the iPhone, and the EQ switches

My reason for wanting an analog input is because I would like to be able to use this to listen to ...
The only downside is that there is no analog input but it's not advertised as having an analog input so no harm done.My reason for wanting an analog input is because I would like to be able to use this to listen to my turntable. I found a workaround though. I take the pre-out from my Rega Brio amp and send that to my computers audio interface. Then I open Ableton Live and have my turntable audio feed into Ableton and output through the HiFi-M8. It's kind of a hassle but still sounds good.Overall, amazing amp dac combo for the price. I did a side by side with a friends much more expensive desktop amp and they were virtually indistinguishable.

Best headphone amp bar-none.
Wow! Just wow! It's tough to beat the FiiO headphone amp, but this one does it. Yes, it's larger and heavier than the FiiO, and it has more adjustments to mess with (not a bad thing, but something to think about if you shuffle your music), but the sound enhancement outweighs every negative. This is an audiophile's dream headphone amp.
