Good rod, one thing to note though is it is covered in protective oil.

Bigger than 0.5" diameter!
Wasn't 0.5".. more like 13mm. So, it didn't fit the hole and is worthless to me.

Not High Pure Iron
This is not high pure soft iron. If you are looking for high purity iron { >99.8 % pure Fe and with a relative permeability of (1000 - 5000)}, this is not it. Relative permeability of this rod is even less than carbon steel.

This is NOT soft iron. It’s mild steel. It will not perform well as an electromagnet core.
