Q: Could this be configured into a travel cage for a large bird?

You need to assemble the 4 sides and the top that are permanently affixed on at least one side. The black bottom tray is removable but when you do the bottom is open. The shelves provide the stability and strength for the overall cage. You would need to install a perch of some sort to provide stability. The upper section and the lower section open independently in the front so may not be large enough to get a large bird through. I get asked a lot of various things about this cage. I still wish the company had one on display in several locations. The wheels do not need to be attached. Hope this is helpful. Shannon in Fulton, MO.

Our cat was suffering from a urinary tract infection and as a result, had many accidents. We used the cage for overnights when we weren't with her.

Scroll thru Amazon and see separate items. I separately purchased mats that velcro to the shelves, food and water bowls, and a litter pan. I do not use the hammock. Noel loves the vertical scratching post. Replacement posts are available. We have his sire in the house and a blind dog so Noel has adjusted well to the cage. When it is his turn to come out and have run of the house, the other two animals are shut off in another room. We also have 4 feral cats on our porch that have heated houses and water bowls and roam our land during the day and come up and are shut in during the evening. Oh yeah, and a horse! Recommend two people to assemble. Tried to attach photo but not one of his best. Enjoy the cage!
