Q: What are some real life use cases for 5, 10, and 20 MIL thickness?

5ml is fine for dust covers, paint protection, light weight coverage without much disturbance from the elements, 10 mil is good for dragging a load of dirt out of truck bed or trailer, or moving a leaf pile to a composting area... short term use it holds up tougher conditions, 20 mil is what you would buy to protect something long term in the elements.. like a roof for a dog kennel or a boat/tractor cover or sliding asphalt shingles into a dumpster during a tear off or to cover that roof during a storm...20 mil will take a repeated beating.

Q: I am looking at the 20 mil 12 foot by 20 foot. Are the grommets every 18 inches along all edges (length and width)?

Yes, the grommets are spaced approximately every 18 inches starting from the corners. You may get spacing slightly over or under 18 inches on the 20 foot side; the 12 foot side is fairly close to 18 inch grommet spacing. We added extra grommets as we wanted to tightly stretch the tarp over our bent pipe quonset hut.
