"Grid Down" isn't something many people have experienced - or want to experience. Imagine a day when mains electricity stops working. No phones, no internet, TV or radio, no water out of the tap, no electric cooker, no flushing toilet, but that is just the start. In a matter of days there will be no food in the shops and potentially violence in the streets as people realise the enormity of their situation. War, weather and other natural disasters can destroy critical power stations in seconds. A terrifying concept if you aren't prepared for it. Preparing to survive (prepping) is rapidly becoming a 'mainstream' interest as we begin to face financial ruin, possible war and climactic change. Each presented a unique set of challenges that needed to be faced without a book of instructions. However, Ted Riley has used his extensive knowledge and understanding to create a comprehensive handbook to alert people to the dangers and explain ways to combat them. Although written ostensibly for a U.S. audience, IMHO, this book is appropriate for an intelligent British readership. It offers ideas that will work in almost any setting and even if it is ‘light on detail’ a little research will fill in any gaps. One book will never answer all the questions! As a long term prepper (30 years and counting) I'm well aware of potential issues but I gleaned a huge amount from Ted's book. All kinds of strategies and 'hacks' to cope with negative situations alongside lists, instructions and so much more make this an invaluable publication for newbies and experienced preppers alike. Don't take my word for it, go and get a copy for yourself, you won't regret it!

Interesting book, gives basic ideals and products you can purchase. This is an American writer so not all products can be brought in the UK but you can find similar on Amazon and from other retailers. Overall a good book, especially for anyone wanting basic ideas and not an overload of info. Probably not for anyone looking for a more advanced and detailed info.

concise, well and clearly written, unlike some it doesnt assume the reader has a special forces history ! easy to follow with useful information you could actually need. no "how to build a nuclear fall out shelter with a spoon a tarp and a length of string" , but info on what you actualy need in that medical kit, reasonable cooking methods. one of four books you NEED for when nuclear powered zombies take over , or more likety power outages happen or weather traps you at home.

What a brilliant book I could not put it down it answered all my questions and more. Gives you some really good commonsense ideas of what to get ready for. the practical advise and projects were fun to complete. When the inevitable comes I'm glad I have this book as a reference. I highly recommend this book. SH

I bought this after enjoying his book “when crisis hits suburbia” back when I knew nothing. But…I’m struggling to see who this book is for. If you’re not a complete beginner, the contents is of no use as it’s common knowledge to anyone who has done some research before. Perhaps the odd thing might be new, in a way, but they’re likely things outside of “normal mortals” price ranges. If you are a complete beginner, you will not appreciate reading “I’m going to assume that you have the basics covered” or “in my first book” or “in my second book” I’ve attached a small picture of roughly the middle page, which includes this language, as well as (astonishingly) a request for an Amazon review. In the middle of the book! Very American, with no attempt to convert measurements for a wider audience. There are better books out there. I don’t want to knock him as an author, but this feels lazy. If you’ve not read his book “When Crisis Hits Suburbia” it’s definitely better than this. Jim Cobb’s - Coutdown to preparedness is a good one, with a timeline and tick sheets to get you started. Creek Stewart’s - The disaster ready home has lovely colour photographs and is packed with useful info. Especially if you’re new to this. At £13, for me, this was a waste of money.

Great book add to your collection always useful information. Never know when you’ll need it, but you’ll be glad you had it..
