Q: Will this also work on a 2" OD pole?

Now that I look at the posts I purchased, they are all 2-3/8" posts, which was all they had at the hardware store. I never gave it a second thought. The brackets are stamped "2-3/8" DIA." There is plenty of room on the screw to tighten the bracket, so a 2" OD post could be ok. The box I received had 51 brackets.

Q: What’s the best fastener for attaching 2x4s to this or it doesn’t matter what I use?

Simpson offers a 1 1/2 " just for their fasteners. Makes a good connection.

Q: For what size of pipe are these suitable?

I used the on 2 3/8, worked very good.
