A must read for a Texas History buff
This is a heartfelt account of what it felt like to be a woman settler in early Texas. I am currently at the part where the Civil War breaks out, and what Maria had to deal with during a war, with 4 children, and a "not so present" husband. She has patience beyond belief to put up with her situation. I would recommend to anyone interested in women in history.

Look into a Women’s life in Early Texas
The letters really documented what it was like for a women to live in Texas. It was a hard life for Maria but she made it and her children were successful. It is a good read for anyone interested in Coastal Bend history or early texas History.

Fascinating view of history
I first read this book when I was employed by the granddaughter of Maria Von Blucher. I loved it so much, I had to buy my own copy. The letters from Maria back "home" to her parents in Germany provide a raw view of the pioneering experience of a well-to-do immigrant from Germany settling in the "new" town of Corpus Christi, TX.

I'd love to find more like this
An intimate look at early Texas history, seen through a woman's eyes. Maria's life was so different from what we know in our modern, convenience-laden society---and yet, so many of her problems were the same as women across the globe and across the centuries. I was fascinated by her account of life in early Corpus Christi.

Must read Texas history
This was such a great book. Absolutely fascinating that a family actually kept all the letters she wrote, that they were translated in an interesting way, and that she lived in such an interesting period of history. Loved the insight for this particular period of Texas history.
