Met expectations.
This book was a gift for a friend who had just completed German I at Kent State. He’ll continue to study the language instead of taking German II.

Ausgezeichnet
Excellent. Well organized complete summary of German grammar in a useful and pleasant format.Organized by part of speech it covers the complete range of grammatical principles. It covers both written and commonly spoken German, detailing how each is different in each example. Also details usage with lots of easy-to-follow sample usages. The examples sentences are all translated, but most are fairly simple German. Details the usage of every single prepositions with a full range of examples about the full range of uses, as well as much, much more. The coverage is simply superb.Explanation are very clear, without obscurity and without cruft. You might even say the explanations are elegant, as elegant as this kind of reference can be, but outstanding in any case.It may seem like overkill for a beginner, but if you're going to buy a grammar, you might as well get a complete reference grammar as the cost is not much more and it will stand up to years of use. With basic introductory German, it is easy to follow. Much easier to follow that a typical reference grammar for English.Includes a complete, 20 page + index which includes the German words mentioned, the cooresponding English words, and grammatical concepts. Makes it quick to find the specific point you are looking for.Softcover, but appears to be well bound and the paper is much better quality than most modern books. Also contains judicious use of blue for the heading to make this organization clear. And tons of tables to summaries information. Nice layout, nice paper, nice binding - sets it apart from most books printed in the Amazon age. It's nice to see that Routledge is still a publisher you can trust. [How Amazon sent the book, however, is inexcusable - it was sent in a bubble envelope! Not ideal for a weighty softcover]A valuable tool for the language learner. Highly recommended.

Great German Reference Book
I previously bought the 5th Edition of this book which has become well worn. This is a great book for looking up how to form a particular type of statement in German. I do not know of any German reference book which is nearly as comprehensive. I would not recommend it as a text book.

Excellent!
Excellent book! It is very detailed with many examples. Goes far and beyond what the average German Grammar books offer. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their Deutsch.

Impenetrable and Inaccurate
This is a dreadful book. Rather than being organized according to any instructional principle, each chapter treats a discrete grammatical concept in isolation down to its last detail and rare exception. Its unreadability might be redeemed by its value as a reference if it were not riddled with errors (as others have pointed out). Useless as a tool for learning or teaching German.

Disappointing
I had high expectations, but got quickly disappointed. They should really revise it well, they can't even get the basics right. If you look at page 2 they get the gender wrong for (Das Streusel) and (Der Purpur). It makes you lose confidence in the whole book.

Excellent Guide
Bought to catch up on changes since retirement from teaching 12 years back. Found the book comprehensive, clear and very up to date. Very good on "register" as well as prescriptive grammar - what people say as well as what they "ought to say". Good too on regional usage. Cleared up several points that in 40 years I have never been 100% clear on and Germans couldn't explain.
