Portable organization
When I was in college many years ago I had a couple of folding stackable bookshelves. Since I moved often these were ideal for transporting easily from place to place, and easy to set up. I was always acquiring more and more books. I had my original book shelves for nearly 25 years, and had added considerably to my collection of folding bookshelves, but catastrophes happen, and I lost them. Living in a new small space, I absolutely NEEDED this type of shelving again. The Winsome Wood shelves are easy to put together (granted, one stage of building them can test your patience, but still its easy). For their weight and portability they are sturdy -- I have some heavy books. The finish is nice. They stack well. Where I live there are uneven floors, and I am able to put tiny shims at the bottom that levels them out and stablizes them readily (important to have them stable if you have many heavy books). Additionally, the shelves can be screwed to the walls in some cases if such security is needed (perhaps with children that might pull on them and dump the shelves and their contents) and the connecting hardware for stacking can act as anchoring hardware. With the 3-tier units and the 4-tier towers, a variety of configurations can be arranged, making them versatile and attractive. I have used many styles of shelving, and other than "built-in" bookshelves (obviously not portable and limiting in their ease of rearranging), these are by far my favorite shelving solution. If I had more room I'd have even more of these shelves. Well worth the price. Ideal for students, small rooms, frequent moves, but nice in nearly any setting (I used a previous set as an entertainment center in my living room). I definitely would recommend these easily portable versatile shelving units.

Solid, attractive wood bookshelf
Very nice quality, hard wood, color as expected and assembly went smoothly by following instructions explicitly. Screws just right for the job, and fit well. Nice stable shelf. It did help to have another set of hands to hold sides up while assembling.

Wonderful "whatever you want on it" shelf
I had this shelf a long time ago. Over a decade ago and I'm shocked it's still made as most things seem to faze out. The other half of me isn't surprised as this shelf is wonderful for what it is. It can hold whatever will fit in the dimensions of the shelf under 12 inches in height. I have books and some bookshelf speakers in mine. It's sturdy as the moving parts wouldn't be moved a lot at all, but the option is certainly there to pack it up and move it. The installation was easily done myself but I had a drill too. I'd imagine hand screwing it the screws would be a bit harder. I've never had the thing tip over because I'm pretty aware of my surroundings and don't place it in walk ways but it does have hardware to secure it to walls just in case. Love this thing and I'd imagine it will be around for a long time.

Needs to be assembled
Beautiful bookcase, holds a lot, comes with material to attach to a wall, and to attach two stacked bookcases together. But be warned: it needs to be assembled! Unlike others of this type, you don't just take it out of the box, open the sides, and flip the shelves down, you have to put all the pieces together first. And it is NOT easy. I managed to do it by myself, with great difficulty, but it really needs at least two people and ideally three. I would have given this five stars if it came already assembled as I had expected.

Nice solid wood folding book shelf
Very good packaging. This is a solid wood product, so it is a little heavier in transport and needs the strategic packaging. Was easy to set up, instructions were clear. It is sturdy even though it is easy to fold and transport.

Poor Quality Control
I, alas, ordered six of these, because they resembled similar shelves that I like very much that are sold from The Container Store (and probably elsewhere). I thought it would be convenient to have Amazon deliver them right to my door rather than have to go across town to the Container Store. Alas. First, unlike the ones available from the Container Store, these do not come pre-assembled. Therein lies the problem. While the process of assembly is actually quite simple, the lack of quality and quality control makes the process quite difficult and the results poor. First, the wood screws provided are extremely cheap. Since you have to screw them into hardwood, this is an issue. They provide a number of extra screws and this is probably because you are bound to strip many of them trying to get them in. I tried it with both a traditional screwdriver and a cordless drill. On the first set of shelves, one of the six places for screws simply would not yield. Every screw would strip. The best I could do was get the screw about 3/4 of the way in. On the second set of shelves, this was the case for 3 out of the 6. I ended up having to go to Home Depot, buy a box of decent screws, then pre-drill the areas, then screw the new screws in. What is more, on some of the sets of shelves, the little mini-hole they drill in the wood to let you know where to start the screw was drilled in the wrong place--too low. In one set, there were two sets of holes on one side, neither in the right place! These screws are used to fix brackets with metal pegs on them (the foldable shelves come down to rest on these). On the first set of shelves, the metal peg came right off the metal bracket! I don't know if it is just glued on, as opposed to welded, or if the weld was particularly bad, but that was frustrating. The shelves are somewhat awkward to assemble with just one person, but it can be done. It is just frustrating. I felt the second one I assembled was too poor quality to use, but I stacked the first and third ones together and screwed on the metal brackets to join them. It was then that I discovered that the the top set of shelves, on the right side (the sides have two pieces of wood joined together by hinges so that the sides can fold inward), had unequal lengths for the two side pieces. Anyway, to make a long story short, I stopped assembling them after the third one, because I realized it would be a lot of work and the resulting assembled item would be poor quality. Instead, I just got on-line and ordered 4 of the Container Store shelves. They won't get to me fast, but they come pre-assembled and I know are good quality. (do an Amazon search on foldable stackable shelves java, and you will get a link to those shelves at the Container Store) I don't know what I am going to do with the remaining shelves. I am sure it would be a pain in the butt to return them to Amazon.

Great shelf, follow assembly directions EXACTLY
Great folding shelf. You MUST follow the directions to a t when assembling. If it says to lean it against a wall while putting shelves in, do that. If it says turn it sideways, do that. Initially could not assemble until I followed their directions EXACTLY.

Exactly what I was after! Was looking for a bookshelf for my ever-accumulating collection of books, but did not want anything that would take up a lot of space. This fits very nicely into the corner of our living room, holds all my books with room to spare, and when not needed, I like the feature that it can be folded up! Nice looking and solid piece. Definite value for the money! Highly recommended.

Anything I can take out the box and don't have to work at assembling it a major bonus. And, when it looks as good as this shelving unit all I can say is ......yeah!!
