Style:B&K Precision 1710A This B&K Precision single-output linear DC power supply unit provides a constant source of DC voltage for powering and testing electronic devices in research and development, production, and laboratory applications. The power supply unit (PSU) has one output that provides adjustable DC voltage and current. The operator can choose between high and low current settings to help improve stability and measurement accuracy. Two analog displays show voltage and current readings simultaneously. The output current can be adjusted using the fine and coarse control knobs on the PSU's front panel. Two PSUs can be connected in series to supply more voltage, or they can be connected in parallel to supply more current. A cooling fan helps prevent overheating, and built-in overload and reverse-polarity protection helps prevent damage to the PSU and the device under test. This B&K Precision power supply unit is offered with a choice of rating voltage and current, and weight.SpecificationsNumber of outputs1Load regulationLess than or equal to 0.01% of voltage reading + 3mV (millivolts); less than or equal to 0.2% of current reading + 3mA (milliamp)Line regulationLess than 0.01% of voltage reading + 3mV; less than or equal to 0.2% of current reading + 3mARipple and noiseLess than or equal to 1mV RMS (root mean square)Ripple currentLess than or equal to 3mA RMSRecovery timeLess than or equal to 100 μs (microseconds)Meter accuracy+ or – 2.5%Power requirements120VAC at 60HzOperating temperature and humidity32 to 104 degrees F/0 to 40 degrees C, less than or equal to 75% relative humidityDimensions158 x 140 x 318mm/6.2 x 5.5 x 12.5 inches (H x W x D)H is the vertical distance from lowest to highest point, W is the horizontal distance from left to right, and D is the horizontal distance from front to back.Power supply units (also known as PSUs, AC power supplies, DC power supplies, and battery eliminators) provide AC or DC voltage to power or test devices such as tools, appliances, and electronic components. The PSU draws energy from a line source such as a wall socket and converts it to a constant, specified amount of voltage or current that is then outputted to a connected device. In general, a power supply unit will be classified as either a linear PSU (also known as a linear regulation or line-frequency PSU) or a switched PSU (also known as a switching-mode power supply, SMPS, or switcher). Typically, a linear PSU has a simpler design and provides a faster transient response time and less electrical interference and noise than a switched PSU. A switched PSU is often smaller, lighter, and more efficient than a linear PSU and generates less heat. The transient response time of a PSU indicates how quickly the PSU can resume the desired constant output after a sudden change in input. Ripple voltage or current indicates how much unfiltered noise and AC voltage or current is present at the output of a filtered power supply operated at full load. The temperature coefficient is the percent average change in output voltage per degree centigrade of change in ambient temperature. Fuses, current limiters, and other forms of overload protection can be built into the PSU to help protect against voltage spikes or short-circuiting.B&K Precision manufactures test and measurement instruments for research and development, production-line testing, and electronic field service applications. The company, founded in 1951, is headquartered in Yorba Linda, CA. It meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001:2008 and is compliant with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) directives.

A very good 30v 1A power supply.
This review is for the BK Precision 1710A 30V 1A Power supply. The item arrives well packed in a retail box with a paper manual, a set of basic alligator leads, and a set of spare fuses. It is exactly as pictured on the item page. The supply is 6” tall, 5-3/4” wide, and 12-1/2” deep (knobs and heat-sink induced). The knobs are 5/8” deep and the rear heat-sink is 2-1/2” long. The included 18awg cord is about 70" long. The read and black leads are 22awg and a little over 20” long, the wire on both ends soldered in place in accessible for repair if needed.I did a 16 hour burn in on my power supply at 9v and 900mA. The rear heat-sink stabilized at 104F (with an ambient temp of 70F) and I had no problems. The supply has no fan so it is stone silent under this load with no transformer whine. I did some on - off cycles while hooked up to my Oscilloscope and it did not surge over voltage when I turned it on and off, instead it smoothly came up and down to the specified value. After adjusting the left edge of the Volts needle at 0, I read the center of the needle for values. BK claims an accuracy of +-%2.5 and I found this to be true. I used an Amprobe AM-250 DVOM for my measurements (sorry I don't have a Fluke).1v BK = 0.989v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.025v)3v BK = 2.99v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.75v)5v BK = 5.02v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.125v)8v BK = 8.09v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.20v)10v BK = 10.08v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.25v)15v BK = 15.29v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.375v)20v BK = 2.33v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.50v)25v BK = 25.32v on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.625v)30v BK = 30.46 on DVOM (Tolerance +-%2.5 = 0.75v)After adjusting the the center of the Amps needle 0, I then read the center of the needle for values. BK claims an accuracy of +-%2.5 and I found this to be true. Again, I used an Amprobe AM-250 DVOM for my measurements. (I didn't list the lower Amp scale (0-.25A) readings below but I found them to be just as accurate.).1A BK = 0.98A on DVOM.2A BK = 0.196A on DVOM.4A BK = 0.394A on DVOM.6A BK = 0.598A on DVOM.8A BK = 0.793A on DVOM1A BK = 0.996A on DVOMAs far as ripple goes, BK claims 3mV. I'm just a hobbyist so I had to look up the proper way to measure ripple without getting outside noise and did my best with what I had on hand. I used my Picoscope 2204A, 1X probe, AC coupled, 5M samples, at 12bit. The probe was direct wired to the outputs with very short pieces of 22ga wire and I did the test in my basement to try and limit radio interference. With this setup I measured 2.16mV ripple so it's well within spec. See the pictures I posted with this review. The supply automatically switches from CC Voltage Mode to CC Current mode as needed depending on your settings. It also has reveres polarity protection. I suggest anyone interested in this item to read the manual available on manufactures website because it covers a lot more than I can in this review.Overall I like everything about this supply and I am very happy with it.I would buy it again and I would recommend it to a friend. But anyone considering this item should also consider the BK Precision 1730A 30V 3A Power supply, because it's basically the same thing but can push three times the Amperage.
