Q: Are the handles for the hooks plastic or rubber?

They feel like a plasticky rubber on the handle.

Q: What is the number size of the yarn?

There is no size on any of the skeins or in the instructions. It is a fine yarn. Lots of colors. The real value to me is the kit with all the tools. I can always get dif size yarn later. However, the instructions for one new as to how to use the tools is lacking other than the hooks themselves.

Q: Does the book have any patterns?

no just basic crochet stitches etc
