Why do you have to face it? i'd assume its for the eyes to absorb then? or is it dermal? face, but don't look? uv screen in product?

Bright light therapy works when the light contacts the cones in your eyes. That said, you should not stare at it. It is best actually slightly above your eye level (like the sun) and 45-90 degrees to the side. Don't wear sunglasses, just don't stare at it. And it will not be effective if you keep your eyes shut per current studies.

What is the recommended/optimal distance for the 10000 lux?

User guide for this product says 8-18”. And don’t look straight at it. Have it pointing at you on the side of your face. The light will still enter your eyes and you will get the appropriate therapy from it.

Does the light peek out of holes instead of the entire circle as one complaint stated?

The light mimics the sun with full light shining through the front of the the disk. Light also comes through the little holes around the side of the circle. It has 3 settings: high, medium & low. Never look directly at the light on high when you are turning it on. Also, the plug gets hot so I always unplug the lamp when not in use.

what are the product dimensions?

The round white lens is 4 and 1/4 inches in diameter. The overall height of the unit is about 6 inches, and the width from side to side is also about 6 inches. From front to back, it's about 5 inches thick. I measured with a ruler. My measurements may be off by about 1/4 inch because I don't have calipers to pinch the object being measured, but I think that should give you a fairly good idea of the size. Whoever said that the lens is 5 inches in diameter did not measure correctly.
