Sturdy enough. Took a point off for "thickness," because these are hollow. While that isn't a huge deal for many lesson plans, I discovered when testing that a 10-rod is almost exactly half the weight of ten unit blocks. This is a big problem for investigation based plans using balance scales. For kinesthetic learners (for whom these are some of the best tools) you can't compare equality based on a balance pan scale. Further, seven on these weigh about the same (slightly less) than a 100 flat. The compound components of the set need to weigh the same as their component parts.

These are actually great except I opened them new from the package (well from the ziplock bag they come in) and two were missing. I counted them out in groups of 10 to distribute and there were 48 blocks. I also had the same problem when I ordered Base Ten Unit blocks. This makes it difficult when practicing with my students as I have to buy my own manipulatives for my classroom. These were untouched by anyone else except myself so there was no possibility that someone else took them out. This would be 5 stars if I had received a complete set.
