Emily Prickleback's Clever Idea (Magic Animal Friends #6) (6)

One of My Kids' Favorites in the Series
This is book 6 in the Magical Animal Friends series, modeled after the popular Rainbow Fairies books (same formula, two girls encounter a magic being that introduces them to a very "fluffy" version of a magical battle between good and bad). This book is my 7 yo daughter's favorite so far of the first 8. My 9 yo enjoys reading these series as well, but she has other books that are her favorites. My 9 yo reads at an 8th grade level and reads these books in ~20 mins, my 7 yo reads more at 3rd grade level and usually reads them over the course of two evenings at bedtime.Parent Rundown:+ It is not necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this one, so if you have a young girl who likes hedgehogs, she can enjoy this story.+ This is a beginning chapter book designed for budding readers, but can be enjoyed by girls through mid-elementary grades.+ No potty humor.+ Books contain magic and fantasy as well as an evil witch, Grizelda. My 9yo comments that Grizelda never really does anything which eventually makes for anticlimactic reading.+ Plot summary: This is the second of four books in the series about dragons that the evil witch Grizelda uses to try to foil life for the magic animals of Friendship Forest, so if your child reads this one, she may want books 5, 7, and 8 as well. This book features the second dragon, Dusty, sent by Grizelda the Witch to turn Friendship Forest into a desert. He turns the Prickleback Family of hedgehogs to stone and ruins a perfectly good boat race and picnic to boot.+ Emily Prickleback cries when her family is turned to stone and she also has a scary near-miss fall from a hot-air balloon.+ Grizelda makes one brief appearance.+ Plot is resolved by showing Dusty the Dragon how much fun water balloon fights are and Dusty reverses her spell.+ Book contains a puzzle page and facts about Hedgehogs in the back and sketched map of Friendship Forest in front.+ Expect the content to be a tad vapid, as the Rainbow Fairies certainly were, but these books encourage children to read more when they need a mental break from school work.
