Q: Is this essentially a longer version of the 18 inch All in One? Seems like the extensions from this board can turn it to a "round" as well.

Essentially... not really. The peg spacing on the 18" is 3/8. The Peg spacing on the 28" is 7/16. Its personal preference and the choice will depend on which yarn weight you like to use more and really how big you want to be able to knit without matching up separate panels.I have both and find I use the 28" more. I feel the small 1/16 difference between both of the boards pegs works and looks better with the yarn I like to use.

You can use the 28" long board but to make a good sized Afghan you will have to make 2 or 3 panels and join them. If you use the S loom or infinity loom as a rake or double knitting set up it will make a nice size afghan. There are videos online to show how. I have done both. Hope this helps

Q: What is the gauge (space from center of peg to center of next peg) on this board?

Both of my knitting boards are 7/16" from center peg to center peg.
