The celebrated duo of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are back as the masterful Sherlock Holmes and his faithful cohort Dr. Watson. Based on the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES features six tales of mystery, deduction and suspense! Join the famous sleuth and the good doctor on yet another round of adventures. Quick, the game's afoot! Review: A Beautiful Painting in Motion - I was delighted to watch this “best-ever” film version of Sherlock Holmes’ detective stories once again after nearly three decades. Thanks to many reviewers’ detailed and thoughtful comments, I feel no need to make additional remarks about superb acting of Jeremy Brett, David Burke, Edward Hardwicke, and so many excellent supporting casts. But I must recognize that we were extraordinarily lucky to have the Granada Television which created one after another exquisite programs such as “Sherlock Holmes,” “The Jewel in the Crown,” “Brideshead Revisited,” etc. I think that the whole production team for “Sherlock Holmes” did fantastic and amazing feats. They recreated a social setting for the peak period of British Empire very effectively and described all details in highly artistic fashion. So this particular version of Sherlock Holmes appears to be a beautiful painting in motion and a great historic record at the same time. I realized that Sherlock Holmes’ detective stories occurred ‘between about 1880 and 1914’ when ‘Holmes would be between 26 years old and 60 years old.’ Indeed the Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, celebrating the 60th anniversary of her accession, took place in 1897. My wife and I purchased the first three volumes and then the remaining two volumes of Sherlock Holmes completing the whole collection in Blu-Ray. Despite negative comments from certain reviewers about several episodes toward the end of program, we enjoyed the entire collection of 41 episodes and tried to revisit some of the original novels from time to time. Although we definitely prefer a “purist” approach for dramatization with word for word, our impression was that liberal interpretation and stretching storylines in a few episodes were done quite tastefully and often in style. I was relieved to learn that some of stretching storylines had nothing to do with failing health of Jeremy Brett near the end of the program. Jeremy Brett’s excellent acting was consistent to the end. I also compiled the list of Directors involved in order to check whether some of stretching storylines of Conan Doyle’s original novels were influenced by excessive zeals of certain Directors. Such speculation turned out to be wrong. For example, Peter Hammond directed a classic episode of The Sign of Four (1987) as well as almost gothic tale of The Eligible Bachelor (1993). Episode List (with Director’s names, Original Air Sequence) >> The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984-1985) > The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986-1988) > The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes (1991-1993) > The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994) > The Feature Film Collection of Sherlock Holmes (1987-1993) << The Sign of Four (dir. Peter Hammond, 1987-a) The Hound of the Baskervilles (dir. Brian Mills, 1988-e) The Master Blackmailer (dir. Peter Hammond, 1992-a) The Last Vampyre (dir. Tim Sullivan, 1993-b) The Eligible Bachelor (dir. Peter Hammond, 1993-a) Review: The casebook of Sherlock Holmes - This is an excellent series that is the finest portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.

THIS is about the far-superior BLU-RAY (Series/Season 3) [1991-'93] collection.
This is the third set of [six] 50 minutes. Three feature-length episodes are pre- sented with another 2 on the FEATURE FILM COLLECTION (sold separately). This season stars [as do all 4 seasons/"series"] Jeremy Brett [1933-'95] as Holmes. Edward Hardwicke [1932-2011] plays the role of Doctor Watson. From episode 14, on, Doctor Watson is played by Sir Cedric Hardwickes' son. I bought the 12 DVD-disc collection, back in 2009, for $222. Currently, the, complete, 12 BLU-Ray-disc collection costs $150-$200. MY suggestion is to buy each of the five, different BLU-RAY collections INDIVIDUALLY. Due to age and other factors, the DVDs are inferior to the newer Blu-Rays. Buy-as-soon-as-possible; the prices will, soon, rise as there're, only 6, each, of the [individual season-/series-] Blu-Ray sets left. I prefer t-h-e-s-e sets to the [imperfect] VHS-video-cassette-tapes and DVDs. Here's a Listing, in-order, with their prices as of 4/30/2021: ** Adventures of Sherlock Holmes- [3 Blu-Ray discs] @ $35 ** The Return of Sherlock Holmes- [3 Blu-Ray discs] @ $20 **The Casebook of Sherlock Holms[2 Blu-Ray discs] @ $20 *The Sherlock Holmes Feature Films[2 Blu-Ray discs]@$25 *The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - [2 Blu-Ray discs]@$15 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Buy them while you CAN! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Jeremy Brett, literally, put his heart AND sole into these ep- isodes, and while SOME lament ". . Memoirs . ." as being the least of the four, in this collection, I find NO fault with ANY episode, knowing that while the fictional Sherlock Holmes died at the end of Season One, the READERS back-in-the- day demanded Sherlock return from the dead [seen as the second-season]. During "The Memoirs" episodes you can see "Sherlock" die a second time, from which there is NO RETURN, except in these marvelously filmed, and executed, episodes of thirty-six 50-minute, and, five, feature-length movies. Bravo!

This is awesome for people like me, for other people... I have no idea. Obviously.
This is a great version of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. I find it very depressing that the main actor, Jeremy Brett, died of heart failure. He did such a good interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, doing each of the typical "Sherlock Holmes looks" three times daily. There are some people who, when they look for a good Sherlock Holmes series, look for Sherlock Holmes series that are exciting. However, I'm not one of them. When I'm looking for a good Sherlock Holmes series, I look for one that's realistic, not just exciting. I think that Arthur Conan Doyle's late-nineteenth century scripts are good enough without modern robot-like variations. And if you go back to Arthur Conan Doyle's original books, I bet that you'll find Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes copies it word-for-word 90% of the time. So if you search for Sherlock Holmes shows in the style that I do, then you'll definitely like this series.
