Extech MO290 Pinless Moisture Psychrometer with IR Thermometer

I don’t like the on/off button as it easily gets bumped and will turn on when you don’t want to. The depth on the pinless mode seems really good. I like that I can set it down on a flat surface and then back up and take a picture without having to hold onto it like I do with protimeter. Unit has been durable and reliable. It would be nice if they added an accessory jack. Overall good value. I’ve bought several now.

This is one of those "you get what you pay for" products. I used it 3 times and the 3rd time it only reads 0% no matter in what mode it is set for. Changed battery stiil reads 0% even on a wet piece of drywall. I called customer support and low and behold they too said the unit was defective after doing all the tests for them over the phone and they told me it was still under warranty. Then If i take off work, drive to the UPS store, wait in line, pay to have packaged, shipped back to somewhere in the north east, wait a week to 10 days, they will look at it and confirm it really is not working, they would maybe ship a new one.If you add up your loss of work time, gas, wait in line time, phone time discussing what the unit was not doing (working) pay for boxing and shipping you are way ahead to through it in the trash and explain to other potential buyers what unit not to get. Good luck if you try to SAVE MONEY and buy this. This is one of the great lessons of life where you learn not to buy twice.David C Imhoff

So easy to use and works perfectly every time. I will never buy any other. Accuracy is on point and very happy I own one of these. This product is value for money!

The pinless function works fine however the pins continually lose contact. I have to constantly retighten the pins but they are not reliable. I can now only use it as a pinless meter. Also, because the display is not backlit, it is very difficult to read. I use this meter in Crawlspaces and attics quite frequently. Not happy with it’s performance.

This is the perfect tool to use in your house to check and make sure there aren’t any leaking pipes or rainwater getting in to your house. Heavy rains can drive water into the walls and sometimes sinks and toilets a leak and you’re not aware of it. Just lay this thing against the wall against the floor around your cabinets and you’ll know if it’s wet Underneath

I use this every single day while performing home inspections. In fact, it is probably my favorite tool. The problems I have uncovered and the knowledge I have been able to provide with this has payed for it 100 times.Having both the pin and pinless mode is imperative. If it hasn't rained in a few days they without pinless you would never know if there is still leaking. Results are highly reproducible and accurate. One of the nicest things is the fact there is a chart on the back with levels of moisture for different materials/ modes. This is helpful as the pin/pinless modes read moisture differently therefore 30% on one is different from the other.The beeping is a nice touch in hard to reach areas. It would be nice if you could silence it though as can be a bit annoying while using for extended periods.Lastly, the power butting could be moved or redesigned. I like to carry this with me a lot and is easily turned on in a pocket. Not a huge deal but have gone through a few batts quickly when it gets wedged against something in my tool bag.P.S. pin cover is hard to open but that does prevent it from getting lost/ someone sticking themselves. I find it easiest to push on the front and rotate back, usually pops right off that way. Just make sure not to pin yourself.

Bought in November 2021 for professional use in building forensics.Good product - relatively accurate. Pad sensor works well.Pins are not as accurate and you have to jiggle it around to get the reading. A hair's movement and it loses the reading.Button is on the front and activates/powers it on and off easily if you don't have it in your hands. I had in my work bag in its own compartment and would go off randomly all the time.In November of 2023, the power button jammed up on me on a jobsite, beeped on/off for a better part of 30mins, then ultimately just never turned on.Chart on the rear is super useful!Extech instruments was bought by Flir, so maybe they'll work on that.Not getting another one, but good for a first time user.
