Spike Lee documents the former Talking Heads frontman's brilliant, timely 2019 Broadway show, based on his recent album and tour of the same name. Deeply thoughtful and wildly exuberant, David Byrne's theatrical concert American Utopia lit up Broadway last year with Byrne's trademark mix of rhythm and ideas. Working with a vibrant new band and dancers, the former Talking Heads frontman turned his music into an antidote to America's current divisions. Spike Lee's latest joint brings all this joyous stagecraft to the screen in a vital call to connect with one another, to protest injustice and, above all, to celebrate life.

Best Covid-relief imaginable
Genius talent, genius performances by all. Perfect direction by Spike Lee, but all credit to David Byrne, whose songs resonate now more than ever. . This was for me my single, maybe only "joy" since Covid/election/etc anxiety has nearly overwhelmed me. I encourage everyone to make every effort to access this filmed performance.

PERFECT...not kindling. Credits are great too! Super Talent David Byrnes credit.
So impressive from start to final final credits. I used CC and took my emotions sKY high and read along while being amazed at such a profound artist performance. David pulled off what I needed to watch, listen and pay attention to. Then the end with Road To Nowhere after Trump still stuck in denial. Thanks so much.

This was such a beautiful show about the beauty of being human and one’s place in life?
David Byrne's is a beautiful human being-- let's start there! And this show reminds us all the questions we have to live with, as humans, and that we are all in this together. The music was amazing-- can't believe they did all that live! The perspective, the themes and the relevance... if you love music, art, and at least one human being... watch it lol.

Too many closeups weaken the impact and genius of the Show!
Mmmm... Have waited over a year for a record of David Byrne's American Utopia, which I was lucky enough to catch live in Leeds. It was a fantastic concert, and hangs long in the memory - with reminders from the many amateur videos capturing great moments, available since on YouTube. Disappointingly, this, while technically better, fails in other ways. It is simply shot too tightly, mostly. Yes, there are many great wide shots, and some good ones from above - but we miss seeing so much of the two singer/dancers, who were quite fabulous, but in this, because of so much tight framing, are largely glimpsed just dancing in and out of shot. And we're even cheated of the sheer impact of seeing all the wonderfully-grouped, and constantly-moving musicians en masse,, in favour of too many tighter close-ups. Of course this is way better than one head-on camera in the stalls, but, weirdly in trying to give us better coverage, it actually gives us less of everything that's going on, and little sense of the brilliantly choreographed movement. Perversely, the poorer quality amateur recordings out on YouTube actually convey the concert better. And it’s known that Byrne changed the concert content throughout his tour. I actually think we got a better range of numbers in Leeds! So, a great concert from Byrne and co, but only four stars for this particular concert video coverage, I’m afraid!

A great record of a fantastic concert.
We saw this show when it was on tour and were blown away by not only the performances, but also the technical aspects of the show. The sound, lighting and staging are all exceptional. So it was with great anticipation that we awaited the Blu-ray, and it does not disappoint. Actually, it added to the live experience by allowing different viewpoints of the performance and providing close-ups of the performers that were unavailable in the live show. It's a great film and a wonderful record of the show. The energy of the musicians and the audience really shines through. My only regret is that it doesn't include any 'making of' or 'behind the scenes' type featurettes - indeed, there are no extras at all - as I would have enjoyed seeing more about how the show was created.

Get this and Stop Making Sense
Amazing performance. Quality filming and direction. The sound quality is fantastic. The cover carrying details of the audio tracks states Dolby Digital only. Thankfully, this is incorrect. The Blu-ray carries the lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1, DTS and stereo PCM tracks.

David Byrne hits Broadway.
I,ve only seen it once so far but i found it very entertaining and held my interest throughout from David Byrne holdinga brain and philosophizing to the audience until the whole band marched, playing, around the theatre. In Between was a good selection of solo and Talking Heads songs, more expounding views and good playing and dance moves from David and the whole troupe.
