Codename Zero (Codename Conspiracy, 1)

Five stars from my almost 9yo son, 3.5 from me (with reservations)...
This book is about a 13-year-old kid named Carson who tries to rock the tedium in what he considers his boring, small-town North Dakotan life by pulling large-scale pranks at school. Soon he finds himself on the brink of becoming involved in international espionage, and once he decides he's in all the way, he begins to wonder if he didn't bite off more than he could chew.Although my son is an independent reader of this level, this was a book that I picked out to read to him as a bedtime story. This book's recommended age range is 8-12, according to Amazon.com. It was slow in the beginning, but once the pace picked up, we found ourselves really looking forward to reading it each night. I will say, though, in the last third of the book there was a part that I felt was much too intense for my kiddo, so instead of reading the details, I just told him what happened, and we moved along. The protagonist, Carson, is in general a good-hearted kid... although his prank-pulling isn't anything you'd want your kid to emulate, you can tell he's clever and wants to do what's right. The end of the book made my son eager to start book 2.

A great book!
Such a good book. My 10 year old is devouring this series and loves it. He previously loved the Spy School books and was feeling like he wouldn’t ever find another set as good. He got the first one as a Christmas book and less than a week later needed the second. Every spare moment he is reading this book.

My 11 year old son likes it
My son loved this book. He's not a big reader, but said this was a good one. He wants book two and that is a big endorsement. My son really doesn't like fantasy--he says that the only magic is physics. If you have a similarly minded young person, this book might make them happier than Harry Potter.
