Feature list looks impressive but fails to deliver
This detector is sold as being able to do something most other devices like this can’t do - detect hidden cameras automatically. It even says in the product listing “no need to look for a hidden camera by your own eyes”. In addition to detecting hidden cameras it is supposed to also allow you to detect devices that are using wi-fi or other radio frequencies.IN THE BOXIn the box you’ll find the detector itself, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable (no charger included but you can use any USB charger), a red lens, and an instruction booklet.DESIGNThe detector is a cylinder a little over 5 inches long. The product page compares it to a normal pen but it is much larger than a pen and nobody will mistake it for one. One end has a USB-C port for charging, the other end has a pair of red LED lights and an infrared sensor. Along the body of the device are two buttons. One is for power and changing modes, and one is for adjusting the sensitivity. Near the top of the device are 6 LED lights to indicate the sensitivity setting, and near the bottom are lights for WiFi and full-band modes.IN USEOnce you’ve charged the detector up you turn it on by holding down the power button, which is the one closer to the back of the device where the USB-C port is. When the detector turns on it makes a fairly loud beeping sound.RF DETECTION MODESThe detector starts out in wi-fi detection mode at the lowest sensitivity setting. In this mode it is listening for the frequencies that wi-fi devices use. Pressing the sensitivity button increases the sensitivity one step at a time between levels 1 and 5.Pressing the power button again switches the detector to full-band mode which works the same as wi-fi mode except it is listening for all types of radio signals instead of those just for wi-fi.In the wi-fi or full-band modes you search by first setting the detector to the most sensitive setting (level 5) and walking around until it beeps (the sensitivity lights will also illuminate above the current setting light). You can then reduce the sensitivity one step at a time while you try to home in on exactly where the signal is coming from. For some reason the device starts in the least sensitive mode, and the sensitivity button increases the level from least to most sensitive, which is the exact opposite of what you would want. For instance, when you are in the most sensitive mode (level 5) and you pick up a signal you’ll want to reduce the sensitivity to level 4, but rather than just pressing the sensitivity button once you have to push it 4 times because the first press will go from level 5 to level 1, then the second press will go from level 1 to level 2, and so on. Then when you want to go from level 4 to level 3 you’ll have to go through the same process since the button just increases the sensitivity a level rather than reducing it.If the beeping is too much for you you can hold down the sensitivity adjustment button for a few seconds to turn the beeping off or on. When the beeping is turned off you will still be able to see the sensitivity lights flashing when something is detected.CAMERA DETECTION MODEPressing the power button from the full-band mode switches the detector to the camera detection mode. In this mode the red LEDs on the front of the detector flash slowly. The lowest sensitivity light will be illuminated and when the detector detects an infrared light source the second sensitivity light will illuminate and the detector will beep if the sound is enabled. The detector automatically finds cameras if they are emitting infrared light like many do in “night vision” mode. If the camera is not emitting infrared light you can use the included red lens to try and look for reflections of the red flashing lights from the hidden camera’s lens. Pressing the sensitivity button allows you to select from 6 different speeds for the flashing LEDs to help you find the camera lenses. When you are using it in this way it is the same as many other hidden camera detectors on the market and will not automatically find the cameras. So, the main feature that is advertised is really only useful if the camera has infrared lights, otherwise you will be looking for the cameras with your own eyes.PERFORMANCEI found that the wi-fi mode actually won’t detect my wi-fi devices at all. Even if I hold the device right next to them. I’m guessing it is only searching for older wi-fi frequencies or something. Switching to the all-band mode allows it to detect the wi-fi devices. The sensitivity is just okay and doesn’t easily find the signal sources even in the most sensitive mode. Switching to the lower sensitivity modes is a pain as previously mentioned since you have to go up in sensitivity through all the levels in order to go down just one level. The camera detection mode does indeed find infrared light sources, so it does find cameras that are using infrared lights. This is something that other detectors don’t generally do, but in my experience the infrared lights still put out a faint red glow, so you might be able to just see the lights with your eyes anyways without this detector. If the camera doesn’t have infrared lights then you have to use the red flashing lights and the included red lens to search for them manually. This is similar to other hidden camera detectors, however the other detectors tend to have a much better filtering lens built into the unit itself rather than a simple red lens that you have to remember to bring with you. Unfortunately, even if you remember to bring the red lens with you it is actually useless in finding camera lenses. I could not find lenses with the flashing red lights regardless of whether or not I was looking through the red filter. Other camera detectors work far better to find lenses using this method.SUMMARYThis detector is mediocre at best. The wi-fi mode doesn’t seem to work at all, and the all-band mode, while working to some degree, isn’t very sensitive. The controls are not intuitive and make using the device confusing. The main feature, the camera detection mode, is not good at finding cameras unless they are emitting infrared light. So, this detector is really only good as an infrared light detector. For that purpose it works well, but for everything else it isn’t very good.In the end I can’t recommend this device unless you really need the infrared detection ability. There are other detectors on the market that are much better at detecting RF signals and manually finding hidden camera lenses.

tricky to use, easy to be misled
Tested out this hidden camera detector and it performed similar to other ones I have tested. It can definitely "find devices" but that is really all it does. It will pick up phones, wifi access points, devices using wifi or bluetooth, and other wireless connections. It also seems to pick up random wifi and radio signals even when there is nothing around them. I tested this in a few spots in my house where i Know there is nothing; and depending on the direction I point it, it will start beeping. Therefore I think this mostly only works in areas that you know for sure there is nothing, or in areas around your car outside where there is nothing. However it still picked up a couple censors from my car that came with the car.... reducing its effectiveness even more (car year is 2017).So while it can work; it's not fool proof and "finding something" doesn't necessary mean you found anything useful.I also tried this with a little camera that has no wifi or bluetooth connection and found that it couldn't pick it up unless I was basically on top of it. Meaning that if there are hidden recorders; it only finds them if they are wireless. For this reason it gets 4 stars max.

Easy to Use
This LINGYUN Bug Detector is a great hidden camera detector. It is easy to use. It is great to help you find cameras and bugs that are being used to spy on someone that they are not aware of so that they can disable or dispose of them.
