Following one of President Lincoln's last directives, troubleshooter Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) is determined to see the Union Pacific Railroad pushed through to California. Unfortunately, there're lots of obstructionists with a stake in scuttling the project-including Dick Allen (Robert Preston), Jeff's old war buddy and rival for the attentions of postmistress Mollie Monahan (Barbara Stanwyck). Cecil B. DeMille's sweeping opus co-stars Anthony Quinn, Brian Donlevy. 135 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English; audio commentary; theatrical trailer.

This is the "Must Have" Classic for all true Railroad Buffs...
I had always thought I was a Kathryn Hepburn fan, but Barbara Stanwyck can sling a line or two also! Her Irish brogue is truly delightful. Joel McCrea does a fine job also, but is a bit wooden at times.Great acting and directing, and a story line that was very well done for the period in which it was written. However, the Union Pacific tries mightily to steal as many scenes as possible, and often does so quite handily. The track laying scenes are very instructive, with wonderful angles and creative photography. While I have never been an Uncle Pete fan, I knew my railroad library could never be complete without this Cecil B. De Mille classic. This movie is truly a "must have" and I highly recommend it!CHT in Virginia

Black and white 1939 western
An entertaining western film with major classical stars - Joel McCrea, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Preston - not to mention other notables: Lon Chaney Jr., Ward Bond, Anthony Quinn, etc. Quality of A/V production was also quite good; given the age of this movie! The movie ends showing a "modern passenger train" passing (by 1939 period standards) - to contrast it with trains operating some 7-8 decades earlier. It brought a smile since now - 8 decades after this film was made - both kinds of passenger trains depicted in the film are archaic compared to today's forms of transportation.
