Game Development Patterns with Unity 2021: Explore practical game development using software design patterns and best practices in Unity and C#, 2nd Edition Paperback – 10 Aug. 2021

I bought this expecting to read about patterns specific to game development.This book is mostly just a poorly explained re-hash of a number of Gang of Four patterns. They are not specifically 'game patterns' at all - they are just some of the commonest general programming patterns, apparently selected at random, and badly explained. In fact, the author couldn't even think up a game-related example for the command pattern, and ends up giving a TV remote control as an example (the same example the Head First Design Patterns book gives). The only game-related pattern comes right at the end, which is the object pool - which itself is the first idea you hear about in game development, so it's not exactly a major insight.Then the authors pads the rest of the book with a load of waffle about, amongst other things, how giving developers a technical test is an 'anti-pattern' - which, besides being nothing to do with code, is irrelevant to people looking for a book about developing games. At this point, I presume the author was just trying to fill up their contracted number of pages.I felt completely cheated by this book. It's basically poorly recycled material from other books about general programming patterns and has nothing to do with game development or Unity.

A good introduction to a handful of development patterns. Personally, I didn't like much how almost every example in the book comes with a caveat that this is a suboptimal, unorthodox, or simplified use of the pattern.Still, it is easy to understand, very clear, and especially beginner friendly.

I like patterns discussed in the book. It might be a long journey to learn it on your own.You now know some levers to use. Not necessary book, but recommend if you can afford.
