portable scanner
The scanner is very light, thus portable and useful for my needs, whcih is why I gave it a 3. I also have a preference for Canon photo products, as of high standard. However, its software leaves a good deal to be desired. It offers 3 different scanning methods, presumably made simple for easy use, but the options are much too limited. I am restricted to using the Advanced Mode in the ScanGear 1.1E, and even that is too limited. It is the only one in which I seem to be able to crop the photo I am scanning using 'marching ants'--but I have spent much too much time trying to control these 'marching ants' with very little satisfaction. The software falls far below what I am used to. Finally, there is no printed manual to the use of this scanner and its software. The CanoScan LIDE 60 Manual can only be viewed on screen (there is a note to say that if you print it you will not get all the text/features); it does not work to give you the right page for what you need when you need it. I chose this scanner merely for its portability, for international travel, but I am disappointed in its technical operation.

I couldn't be happier with this scanner!
I give it 5 stars for the price. Sure there are better scanners out there, but I doubt there are any this good for the price. I am so terribly happy with myself for picking it. No problems whatsoever. I like that it is fast, that you can send a copy to the printer by just pushing the "copy" button, that you can automatically attach pics to email with the push of a button, that you can make pdf files out of a scan, etc. Thank you again Canon!

Mine was bad...
I think it was just the specific machine I got, but mine was a pain. Ended up having to return it. Finding the drivers for it alone was an obstacle course, but when I finally got them, all the scanner saw was pixelated lines. It wouldn’t even see the white scanner bed or any details of anything on the paper.Thankfully the business accepted the return and was friendly in spite of my grumpy disposition. Thank you for your patience. Two stars because I think I lucked out bad on getting one, the seller was patient, and well, it did _look_ nice. It just didn’t work.

it works ok
I used it to scan in old B&W family/personal snapshots so I could email them to other family members and post on Facebook. It took several attempts to figure out how to use it for that, but ultimately it was successful. If I had to do it over again, I'd scan only ONE photo on each page, so that it would be easier to label them individually, but otherwise, they would just by lying around, unseen, in a manila envelope.Since I don't have much desk space, and this item takes up a LOT of room, it sits in a box in the closet most of the time, and I'll drag it out and reconnect it only when I have a large amount of stuff to scan in. Too much of a hassle to use as a copier, so I just make copies, when needed, commercially.

It is compact and captures a decent image
I like the minimalism of this scanner. I only need to scan things occasionally, and when I do, it gets the job done. The software is pretty old, but mostly still works. My only real gripe is that the scanner is really loud. It makes me wonder if mine was slightly damaged in shipping, but since it just keeps on ticking, I'm going to just keep using it.

Really great and accurate
I inadvertently put a colored red paperclip under the document to be printed and then sent it as a pdf attachment and a lady teacher friend of mine said that the attachment drove her crazy to try to continually pull off that paperclip; that is how good this thing is, I highly recomend it and the price is great also. You can print really good stuff with this one.

I was searching Amazon for a quieter scanner since I don't like using it when people are sleeping nearby (It whines
just searched my receipt, I bought this very scanner for $80 on Aug 13 2005. I was searching Amazon for a quieter scanner since I don't like using it when people are sleeping nearby (It whines, yeah that noise. I thought I better drop this note/review so people don't think this is a recently produced piece of equipment. My guess is they made a tone of these and distributors are still trying to sell them from their dusty warehouses. I will say this scanner made a trouble free transition from Windows 2000 to XP then to Windows 7 without any problems. Given the age of this lide60 they should sell it below $40. I am thinking $25 (new) would be a good fit since the lide 220 is only $80 now.
