Fun game!
My husband and I are huge fans of the Tiny Epic Games! We have several of them and this one was a great addition. It’s a lot of fun, and pretty easy to learn. We’ve played it most as a 2 player game, but I think it’s a bit more fun with 4. It plays pretty quick. Probably around 30mins for a 2 player game.

Fun game
This is one of the better Tiny Epic games in my opinion. It is fun to play and has really good components. Like many (most?) of the Tiny Epic games, it is weighed down heavily by a rule book with many different details that makes it hard to keep everything in mind at once, especially if you only play the game once or twice a year.

Big game in a little box
The nice part about the "Tiny Epic" series of games is that they are portable because of the small box size. But looks can be deceiving because Pirates is a big game actually. Big enough that you have to pack it carefully to get it all back in there. T.E.P. is one of the better games in the series along with Galaxies, Quest, Defenders, and many would argue Dinosaurs/Zombies/Tactics. The game focuses around navigating your crew and deck hands around the board(16 rectangular cards) to sail, plunder, and attack merchant and opposing pirate boats to gain "booty" and sell that booty at markets, then bury treasure. 1st to bury 3 treasure chests wins the game. The mechanics of the game are fun and variable, for a game that is not too tough to learn and play. The rules overhead isn't too steep, but it will take a couple plays to get comfortable with them. The "Helm Wheel" has 5 actions that are randomized at the beginning of the game to make using it variable and different for each player(mostly). The set up takes some time because of all the parts of the game, so keep that in mind as a time factor. I like this game a lot. Once you get past the tedious set up and start playing it is a fun game. Lots of variability because of the helm wheel and randomized card/board layout. But, you will need a decent sized table because of the size of the game. Boxed ...it's small enough to stash in luggage for a trip somewhere. 1-4 players, but optimal might be about 3.

Best Tiny Epic game out of them all
As a fan of Tiny Epic games this one is now my favorite! I watched a YouTube video on rating all the Tiny Epic games. I own 6 out of 12. And this placed 1st. We brought it with us for a group road trip and everyone who played loved it. It was simple to learn and small to travel. You do need space to set it up it does take a good size table, but it is definitely the best Tiny Epic game.

An okay travel game.
I really wanted to love this game but it is missing some things that would make it awesome. First off the ships are cool but the sails are pretty fragile and they actually make using the wooden cubes more difficult to get in and out of the ship. I opted to just glue in the sails though because they look great but would definitely break overtime if I continued to remove and put back in the sails with each gameplay. The thing that I wish was a bit better is this game doesn't feel particularly piratey. You sail around but attacking your opponent really doesn't do a lot other than slightly upgrade your boat which really isn't necessary to come out on top. I also feel for what you are doing and what the game entails it is entirely too long for what it delivers. Very repetitive and can get boring overtime. Overall an okay game to travel with just not something that I would jump to if I wanted to feel like a pirate besting my opponents.

Yes
Definitely fits the title “tiny epic.” It comes in a small box but with many different pieces. I will say I’m impressed with the quality of the pieces as well. There are coins that are metal and the dice are patterned in a fun way. It is complex in that it is a strategy game with only so far you can plan out and you need to adapt as things happen. Overall 5 stars for game play and the great price with quality. I bought this for my husband and the two of us have played and enjoyed it. I will say that I’m not sure if I’d recommend it for travel, totally up to you. It’s in a small box but has many small pieces that might make that tricky.
