Good mix of history
I used this book to prepare for a drive up Highway 61 - then brought it along for reference. A number of places I would have missed. Or only partly understood, without it.Good mix of history, photographs, and personal observations by the authors due I g their own trek.

Title is very deceptive. Should be: ''Racist America and Blues Music.''
''You can't tell a book by its cover.'' is very true about this book. It has plenty of accurate and interesting information about the history of the blues and it's contributors. However, it's main focus seems to be on the racist history of America and the resulting effect on the music. It makes me want to write a book entitled: ''The Wonderful History of the British Empire'', and then focus on it's imperialism, development of slavery across the Americas, Africa and Asia, and their atrocious record of child labor exploitation.

A Very Noce Professional Work
This is a very informative publication. There are numerous photos depicting various locations and businesses along Highway 61. Another reviewer used the term "coffee table" book. I tend to agree with that, although one can take this book on a trip An s use it as a guide. The author started his journey in the North. As I understand it African Americans used this route from the South to the North. The way I intend to take my trip on U. S. 61 and therefore I will need to transpose the information in this book. Also this book begins in Chicago and heads south. U. S. 61 continues North from Chicago and that part for the road is not discussed.I still like this book very much and am glad I purchased it. Thank You....

This book has a wealth of information, in addition to being very well-written. Also, there are many photos (in both color and b&w).

Beauty from oppression.
This latest edition highlights not only a physical journey from Chicago to the New Orleans Delta, but a highlight of the history and evolution of blues music and the huge influence on modern day music. This well researched book includes the struggle of African Americans, visits to "Juke" joints, downtown Memphis and St. Louis.A "must" read for anyone interested in the evolution of the blues and the influence on modern music.

Comprehensive
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it's got so much detail. A book I suspect I shall read and dive into time and time again, a huge research project. I'm planning a not dissimilar journey . This is an informative and warm work and completely referenced so every point of interest can be further investigated.

Brilliant and so interesting
For a long time, I have wanted to do this trip although I always considered doing it from New Orleans to Chicago. I actually have been to a number of the cities/towns mentioned in the book such as Memphis and Clarksdale. The book covered everything that I wanted to know about Highway 61 and the authors should be congratulated on a fascinating tale that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of the blues.
