Unscrew the panel on back with a teeny tiny screwdriver. Then you can put the batteries in. Turn it to "A" and hold down the "REC" button while you speak (up to 10 seconds). Then press "play".

I went to work at 7am and got home at 530. and it was still playing. I spoke sweetly and slowly and he still loves it a year later. he learned to say ,sweet JoJo and gimme kisses from it. Great toy. June

No, you can't record separate messages. The message is the same on a and b. Other than that, this is a fantastic little device. It's way better than I imagined it to be. And the batteries last forever, even if you're playing it for hours and hours every day. I would definitely buy it again, if this one ever wears out.
